In a message addressed to the UC-Berkeley campus community, Chancellor Nicholas Dirks and Provost Claude Steele announced that Professor of Astronomy Geoff Marcy resigned from the UC Berkeley faculty on Wednesday morning: “Professor Marcy’s conduct, as determined by the investigation, was contemptible and inexcusable.”

Report: Collapsed Berkeley Balcony That Killed 6 Students Was Decorative

Taylor Berman · 06/17/15 02:10PM

The fourth-floor balcony that collapsed with 13 people on it earlier this week in Berkeley, Ca., was mostly decorative, according to a member of the Berkeley Design Review Committee that approved the building in 2001. Six students—five of them Irish citizens—died and seven more were injured after the balcony plummeted from the Library Gardens apartment building during a 21st birthday party early Tuesday morning.

Lifestyle controversialist Ayelet Waldman and novelist Michael Chabon, but mostly Waldman, overshare the decor of their Craftsman bungalow with Remodelista. Pick your favorite line. ("The house was built in 1907 by a physician," Ayelet says. "Someone in the historical society told us he did abortions.")

Video of Police Whacking Students With Batons Doesn't Look Good

Lauri Apple · 11/10/11 08:36AM

It's not clear from this YouTube clip what provoked Berkeley, California cops to begin poking at these UC-Berkeley students with such force, but we wouldn't want to be the police spokesperson tasked with explaining this scene to the public.

Jackson West · 08/12/08 03:20PM

The Berkeley Police department responded to a call of a suspicious suitcase outside a building owned by Bayer AG on 7th street between Dwight and Parker. The pharmaceutical manufacturer has their biotechnology headquarters in the town and contributes grants to student research at the University of California. Officers cleared the area and the bomb squad detonated the suitcase — click for more photos from the scene. So the question is: Terrorist hippies for forgetful hobo? (Photo by vathryn)

Facebook chat beta required a 1500 SAT score, or at least a legacy

Nicholas Carlson · 04/09/08 11:20AM

Facebook Chat launched in beta earlier this week, available first to students at Harvard, Stanford, University of Chicago, Berkeley, Brown, Dartmouth and MIT— schools known for their brilliant graduates who go out and change the world. Or at least make a lot of money. Or write nasty things about the people who do. Also: Harvard, Stanford, University of Chicago, Berkeley, Brown, Dartmouth and MIT were the first schools to make Facebook popular, having been the first networks allowed access Mark Zuckerberg's creation. So we have that to thank them for too. Harvard's Alexander Konrad begins to earn our forgiveness, panning the new feature in the Crimson.

UC Berkeley makes it easy to skip class

Tim Faulkner · 10/03/07 03:12PM

UC Berkeley is claiming to be the first university to provide full-length lectures on the popular video-sharing site YouTube. The university is positioning the move as "a public window into university life, academics, events and athletics, which will build on our rich tradition of open educational content for the larger community." But we all know this will mostly be used as a justification for hung-over undergrads to skip class and send their friends messages on Facebook.
