I went to the Bronx Zoo on this lovely New York Saturday hoping to see some lions and other cool animal friends and maybe get an airbrush tattoo. I did not expect to see two grizzly bears fuck for approximately ten minutes (partial video below), but life can unfurl itself in exciting ways when you least expect it.

Caity: The #1 reason I don't drink at restaurants is that there is never anything on the menu I particularly want to drink. But the Tommy Bahama drink menu was designed by an alcoholic child—nothing BUT drinks I want to drink. So I pitched a special all-drinking edition of "The Best Restaurant in New York" to our boss, Gawker Editor-in-Chief Max Read. Max described this as "a great bad idea." At this point, 6:30 on Tuesday, about 3 and a half hours out from our first drink, I would describe his description as "a good description i love everyonnnnnne i love u guys seriously."

Caity: The number one rule of the Bronx Zoo is that you must refer to all the animals you see there as being "from the block." Zebra from the block. Field mouse from the block.

A female peacock that escaped from the Bronx Zoo last night has been recovered from a local parking garage. The fugitive peahen's freedom was so brief, she never even got a Twitter account. [NYDN]

Attention, New Yorkers: Have you seen this bird? A female peacock — technically, we suppose, a peahen — is currently roaming the Bronx, having freed itself from the Bronx Zoo only a few weeks after fellow zoo occupant Mia the cobra escaped.

For the past few days, the Bronx Zoo has been running a poll to come up with a name for the cobra that went missing from the reptile exhibit and was found, still in the reptile exhibit, alive and well. Voters have spoken, and the snake will be called "Mia." Charming.

The deadly cobra that's been missing from the Bronx Zoo for the past five days is terrorizing a middle school! No, actually, it has been found "alive and well," according to Bronx Zoo director Jim Breheny. It was in the reptile house the whole time. That was anti-climactic.

Zookeepers at the Bronx Zoo give these squirrel monkeys a special treat they've never had before: Jell-O filled with blueberries. Hesitant at first, the monkeys end up absolutely loving this rare and slippery treat. Sure beats eating their own poo.

Most museums across the city have been battered by the economic downturn, as corporations and wealthy donors have cut back on charitable contributions and attendance has declined. One way to make up the difference: Invite people to sleep over at the museum and charge them a good deal for the privilege.
