Last night, the New York Times reported on Iowa Congressman Steve King’s attempt to block the Obama administration from changing the face of the $20 bill from Andrew Jackson to the black abolitionist Harriet Tubman. At first glance, the piece reads as straightforward, workaday journalism. On closer inspection, however, it reveals a few of the paper of record’s most entrenched pathologies.

After introducing an amendment to block the Treasury Department from putting Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, congressman, birther and Ted Cruz understudy Steve King offered a characteristically King-ian explanation on Tuesday, slamming efforts to include women and people of color on American currency as “sexist” and “racist.”

Greta van Susteren, the Fox News anchor and remarkably productive blogger, had some thoughts last night about the U.S. Treasury’s decision to substitute the visage of American abolitionist Harriet Tubman for the current one of President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bank note. Greta, take it away:

Donald Trump does not want Harriet Tubman replacing Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, he announced this morning. Just like his old frenemy Ben Carson, Trump would be open to putting the abolitionist hero on a smaller-circulation bill—the $2, say—and keeping the $20 for Old Hickory.

Fuck off, Andrew Jackson. According to The Politico’s Ben White, the United States Treasury will announce this afternoon that America’s seventh president is being thrown to the back (see update) of the $20 bill in favor of Harriet Tubman.

Here's the premise: Beloved abolitionist Harriet Tubman, while enslaved, turns the tables on her "massa" one night by graciously accepting his normally unwanted sexual advances in an effort to blackmail him and earn her freedom. What could go wrong with that bit of comedy?
