Trump Has Much in Common With Crazy-Haired Racist With Populist Appeal, Wants to Keep Him on the $20

Donald Trump does not want Harriet Tubman replacing Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, he announced this morning. Just like his old frenemy Ben Carson, Trump would be open to putting the abolitionist hero on a smaller-circulation bill—the $2, say—and keeping the $20 for Old Hickory.

Maybe Trump, who wants to ban all Muslim immigration to the U.S., sees a kindred spirit in the guy who signed the Indian Removal Act, expelling thousands of nonwhite Americans from their rightful homes. Jackson’s popularity was based largely on his image as a regular guy who rose to power outside the political establishment. And frankly, he could have used a more attentive barber.

Trump and Carson aren’t the only Republicans making a big stink about Tubman’s placement on the bill. This morning, Greta Van Susteren of Fox News said the Obama administration “went stupid for no reason” by making the change. According to Van Susteren, we should have instead created a new $25 bill and put Tubman on that. Surely more talking heads will follow. Welcome to America’s newest totally meaningless right-wing controversy.
