Ho ho go home already
Owen Thomas · 12/24/07 06:00PMValleywag will return on December 26 — barring some hilarious Christmas-Day tech meltdown that calls us to our laptops. Enjoy spending the day debugging your parents' computers and installing your nephews and nieces' new peripherals.
We found the party photos
Paul Boutin · 12/24/07 04:22PMIn case you missed the Valleywag holiday party, James Yu's photoset on Flickr includes the animatronic reindeer, the extremely photographable Joey Wan, plus this shot of Valleywag's latest repurposed contributor, Ted from Uncov, agreeing with Megan Smith from Google that Web 2.0 has no grasp of native multi-threading. To the left, Surya from The Apprentice makes Owen funny-glasses Thomas laugh.
Google gets a piece of Feds' Santa-tracking racket
Tim Faulkner · 12/24/07 01:48PMEvery year, for one day, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or Norad for short, gets the juiciest Web traffic one can expect on Christmas Eve. The government agency responsible for monitoring space for incoming nuclear missiles is also the official tracker of Santa Claus as he travels around the globe delivering presents to the world's children. But why should the government have a lock on holiday pageviews — especially with a Republican administration that claims to believe in the power of private enterprise?
5 people who deserve a Christmas bonus
Paul Boutin · 12/24/07 09:15AMYou know that old story about how the English and German soldiers sang carols to each other from the trenches on Christmas Eve? Then the next day they went back to killing each other? The Valleywag staff dipped into the eggnog and got all feel-nicey about five people we've picked on all year. Each of them, we decided weepily, taught us something about humanity. And that was before the drinking started. Quick, read it before we wake up with a hell-hangover and delete the whole thing.
Where to get your Christmas gifts wrapped
Paul Boutin · 12/21/07 06:33PMYou're a spaz with the ribbons and paper. And of course, as an engineer it's all about optimizing for my time, etc. Don't show up with sloppy giftwrap this year. Take your gifts to the nearest poshtastic shopping center and let someone who knows what they're doing handle it. I called ahead for you, and Gridskipper helpfully mapped out the coordinates.
What's hot this year? GPS devices and digital picture frames
Jordan Golson · 12/21/07 06:00PMMarket research firm NPD Group tells AdAge that Garmin and TomTom will have a very merry Christmas this year. GPS device unit sales are up 488 percent, with revenues rising 214 percent. Translation: GPS units have hit that sweet spot where dropping prices cause sales to explode. Spending on electronics as a whole is down 0.5 percent from last year's numbers. Other hot items include digital picture frames, LCD TVs, and digital SLR cameras. So now you know what to put under the tree if you plan on being a completely predictable trend-follower! (Photo by Jimmy Joe)
