'Don't Be Threatening': Geraldo Rivera's Impossible Advice

Louis Peitzman · 03/24/12 12:22PM

The internet was abuzz with outrage yesterday after comments national joke Geraldo Rivera made on Fox & Friends. In response to the murder of Trayvon Martin, he reflected, "I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin's death as George Zimmerman was." The angry response he unleashed was warranted, but it's worth taking a look at what Geraldo was trying to say — and why he's full of shit.

Gay Men Arrested for 'Buggery' on Caribbean Cruise

Maureen O'Connor · 03/23/12 12:50PM

A pair of 40-something California men were on a gay cruise in the Caribbean this week when police boarded their ship while it was docked in Dominica and arrested them for indecent exposure and "buggery," which is what they call sodomy there. Yesterday morning they pleaded guilty and agreed to pay a $900 fine after a Dominican magistrate called them "rogues and vagabonds."

Bullied Teen Shares Story of Pain and Perseverance in Online Video

Matt Cherette · 12/04/11 12:17AM

A teenage boy named Jonah Mowry posted the above video to YouTube in August, in which he uses note cards to share the heartbreaking story of what a lifetime of being bullied has done to him. It's one of the saddest things I've ever seen, by one of the bravest boys I've never met.

Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger Shoves Foot in Mouth Yet Again

Matt Cherette · 11/30/11 03:08AM

Remember when romance-defiling reality hag Patti Stanger went on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live and suggested all gay men were undesirably effeminate sluts fraught with disease and incapable of monogamy? How about when she then lied to Joy Behar about her remarks while simultaneously making even worse ones? If so, you'll be happy to know that Stanger finally issued a proper, well thought-out apology to Andy Cohen on tonight's Millionaire Matchmaker reunion show.

Jocks Walk Out of Musical Over Gay Kiss

Lauri Apple · 10/19/11 07:19AM

The musical Zanna, Don't! is about a high school where all the smart kids are more popular than the dumb kids, being gay is the norm, and being straight is abnormal. In one scene, two guys briefly smooch. Big deal, right?

Mistrial In Lawrence King Shooting Trial

Seth Abramovitch · 09/02/11 12:36AM

The upsetting trial over the killing of gay teen Larry King, who was shot point blank in the back of the head in computer lab class by fellow student Brandon McInerney, has resulted in a mistrial. The jury voted seven to five in favor of finding McInerney guilty of voluntary manslaughter, not first- or second-degree murder, which meant that seven jurors sided with the defense's version of events: that King brought his death upon himself by acting and dressing effeminately and making sexual overtures (apparently the breaking point came when he asked his tormentor, "What's up, baby?") towards McInerney.

This Week in Commenter Executions: The F-Word

Brian Moylan · 08/19/11 03:38PM

There aren't too many things that offend us here at Gawker, so when something does offend us, it's pretty serious. This week we're banning someone who dared to use the F-word. No, not "fuck." The other F-word.

Gay Teen Now Being Blamed for His Own Murder

Brian Moylan · 08/11/11 02:32PM

Fifteen year-old Larry King (no relation to the CNN interviewer) was shot twice in the back of the head by his classmate Brandon McInerney while sitting in school in Oxnard, California. Now that McInerney is on trial, the boy's legal team and the school administration are using the tried and true "he was asking for it" defense. This is totally disgusting.

Lesbians Kicked Out of Gertrude Stein Exhibit for Holding Hands

Maureen O'Connor · 07/19/11 03:18PM

In the pantheon of places one does not expect blatant homophobia, "Gertrude Stein exhibit at a museum in San Francisco" is pretty high on the list. And yet! A guard at San Francisco's Jewish Museum tried to kick out a pair of females for holding hands at such an event this weekend, San Francisco Chronicle columnist C. W. Nevius reports:

The Racist and Homophobic Yard Sale Posting You Won't Believe

Brian Moylan · 07/18/11 12:53PM

Imagine a bargain hunter's shock and dismay when responding to an ad on Craigslist listing a bunch of possessions for sale and then receiving an email announcing that gay people, Muslims, and illegal immigrants aren't allowed to purchase the wares. Read it for yourself.

Michele Bachmann in Her Own Words: 'Gays Are Part of Satan'

Seth Abramovitch · 07/13/11 12:29AM

We know where Michele Bachmann stands on heterosexuality: She's very for it! At least according to the binding contract she recently signed with Jesus, in which marriage was explicitly defined as being "between one man and one woman." We also know where her husband, Marcus Bachmann, falls on the topic of homosexuality: He's firmly against it! So against, in fact, that he runs a small gay exorcism business, despite he himself being seemingly possessed by the demonic spirit of an off-duty drag queen named Big Mama. But where does Mrs. Bachmann stand on homosexuality?

Gay Teen Murder Trial Begins In California

Seth Abramovitch · 07/06/11 01:48AM

The murder trial has begun for Brandon McInerney, a high school student from Oxnard, California, who three years ago walked into computer class, sat behind openly gay classmate Larry King, and shot him twice in the back of the head. Opening statements from both sides offered new details about that senseless and horrific case.

Texas Coffee Shop Profits After Tweeting Homophobically

Lauri Apple · 07/02/11 05:12PM

Just after New York approved same-sex marriage, the Brown Coffee Company of San Antonio, Texas (does Texas allow same-sex marriage?) posted a Twitter that seemed not-so-coincidentally homophobic. People got mad, so Brown's clowns took that Twitter down and apologized. But they weren't sorry for long (ka-ching)!
