F The Police

Hamilton Nolan · 06/19/09 12:57PM

In your scandalous Friday media column: a reporter has an affair with a police chief, another reporter's charged with assaulting an old man, Meredith is the new queen of magazines, and Reader's Digest increases its pap quotient.

The Future of the Magazine Industry Lies Right Behind the Slightly Irregular XXL T-Shirts

Pareene · 03/05/08 12:55PM

Meredith's Better Homes and Gardens "posted a 71.5 percent jump in single copy sales" in the second half of 2007, making it a rare success story in an industry struggling with newsstand sales across the board. Their secret: selling overrun copies of the mag at "steep discounts" at the dollar store. They had to end that deal when "Wal-Mart threatened to turn the publisher's titles away from its newsstands." Yes, the publishing industry has less clout than the people who manufacture budget toilet paper. [Folio]

The Future Of Magazines, Possibly

Hamilton Nolan · 02/21/08 03:01PM

These are troubled times in the magazine industry. Reed Elsevier announced today that it is selling its mag publishing division, which includes Variety and Publishers Weekly, in order to reduce exposure to "cyclicality" in ad markets. And bad news for any editors looking for employment at Meredith: their president, Jack Griffin, says "We don't hire editors any more. We hire content strategists." Hope they teach that at Medill! But the real question is, is the magazine industry actually changing as quickly and perilously as business types seem to think?

Wal-Mart Dumps Better Homes And Gardens

Nick Denton · 01/18/08 05:34PM

The ouster of the New Yorker from Wal-Mart's shelves is an honor of sorts. Although the the Conde Nast title sells more copies in California than in New York, and has a surprisingly wide reach, its readers aren't the kind to shop at the mass-market retailer. Better Homes and Gardens, another magazine cast out, is appropriately mainstream for Wal-Mart, which makes the Meredith property a more surprising reject. The banishment couldn't have had anything to do with Meredith's over-aggressive sales efforts, could it? [Keith Kelly]

'Child' Magazine Go Bye-Bye

Another fallen soldier: we hear Meredith has aborted baby book Child magazine. Damn you, Cookie, you won't be happy until you have the entire market to yourself, will you? Learn to share! From the inside: "They're keeping 6 people on staff to put out final issue. Everyone else has been asked to leave by tomorrow. Nice guys at Meredith."
