I Have No Idea What This Startup Does and Nobody Will Tell Me

Sam Biddle · 04/18/16 11:22AM

Last week, I received a PDF presentation about “Helena,” a new startup boasting a 20-year-old Yale student CEO and connections—so they claim—to some of the most powerful and influential people in the world, from Stanley McChrystal to, uh, Selena Gomez. I spent the better part of last week trying to figure out what the company does—and I’ll level with you, man, I’m still not sure.

How an Animal Lover Turned Her Father's Investment Into The Dodo, a Money-Losing Website

Editor’s Note: The board of directors of the Dodo has responded to this article, disputing the author’s characterizations of its business strategy, spending rate, staff morale, as well as the timeliness of the story, which addresses many issues that were contained to the Dodo’s first year of operation, in 2014. Its full response can be found below.

The Hollywood Reporter's fawning new profile of CBS boss Les Moonves—one of the media's most overpaid CEOs—reminds us that his daughter Sara is an editor at Vogue, and you're not.

Chelsea Clinton: Money Ain't a Thing

Hamilton Nolan · 06/23/14 12:26PM

Chelsea Clinton, a woman who was paid $600,000 per year by a television network just to be named "Chelsea Clinton," has been doing some soul-searching. "I was curious if I could care about [money] on some fundamental level, and I couldn't," she says. "That wasn't the metric of success I wanted in my life."

Rupert Murdoch “shuffled his media empire’s executives” by promoting his 42-year-old son, Lachlan, to co-chief operating officer of 21st Century Fox. Congratulations to both.

The new VP/ publisher of Sports Illustrated is Brendan Ripp—who happens to be the son of Joe Ripp, who is the CEO of Time Inc., the company that owns Sports Illustrated. Huh. Seems strange to see this sort of nepotism in the media world.

Crush Nepotism Wherever It Lives

Hamilton Nolan · 12/09/13 12:18PM

The New York Times reported yesterday that JPMorgan Chase is under federal investigation for hiring the children of China's elite with the explicit goal of boosting the bank's business prospects. Good. Nepotism on Wall Street is just as gross as nepotism at the media outlets that cover Wall Street.

Andrew Ross Sorkin Is Such a Wall Street Bootlicker Sometimes

Hamilton Nolan · 08/20/13 10:11AM

Andrew Ross Sorkin, the whiz kid-ish New York Times Dealbook reporter, sometimes gets unfairly characterized as a bootlicking Wall Street suckup who wants only to ingratiate himself with the powerful. Other times—like today—that characterization is completely fair.

Nathaniel Rich Is Different From You And Me

Tom Scocca · 04/23/13 05:33PM

Disclosure. Disclosure! I like Frank Rich, based on my small but existent amount of contact with him in the course of my work. And as someone who is well-enough employed, in the unstable business of journalism, and who is still not too old to have maybe have a chance to eventually become better employed, I am also wary of Frank Rich. The former New York Times theater critic-turned-columnist, now a New York magazine writer and an HBO something-or-other, exists within a network of powerful goodwill and even more powerful professional obligation.
