Açaí Fruit's PR Bubble is Bursting

cityfile · 03/12/09 09:48AM

Açaí berries: From the sexy diacritical marks and uncertain pronunciation to the Amazonian rainforest provenance to the claims that açaí will make you skinny, beautiful, healthy, and basically immortal, it's hard to believe that the shiny purple fruit wasn't actually dreamt up by a major corporation's PR team in order to exploit our gullibility as consumers. More than $106 million was spent on açaí last year, Nicholas Perricone sells an açaí supplement, Mehmet Oz endorses açaí, and Oprah, Sumner Redstone, and Rachael Ray have all been reported to be fans at one time or another. Is it any surprise to learn that there's scarcely any scientific evidence for the multitudinous benefits that have been touted?

The Fountain of Youth in a Bottle

Remember those tacky pheromone perfumes that promised to render wearers irresistible to the opposite sex? Slightly classier but even less plausible is Ageless Fantasy, a new perfume which "research" has shown will fool men into believing the woman smelling of it is eight years younger than her real age. But wouldn't it be better to spray on something that actually makes you look younger?

Perricone: Pay For My Creams, Not Injections

cityfile · 09/29/08 10:01AM

Celebrity dermatologist Nicholas Perricone—who has become as well-known for his scandalously acrimonious divorce as for his shtick that eating salmon keeps wrinkles at bay—is concerned about the popularity of Botox and fillers. No, it's not that their effectiveness makes his potential customers much less likely to pay outrageous sums for his skincare products, perish the thought. It's just that cosmetic procedures "all cause inflammation and trauma and I'm not sure this is the best strategy for maintaining a youthful face. The problem with science is that there's a flavor of the month and people get excited, and a lot of it is driven by economics." Whereas he is driven solely by an altruistic desire to help people look pretty, and if that means building a multimillion dollar cosmeceuticals empire and writing bestsellers, well, so be it.

Frances McDormand turns 51 today. Hope Joel got you something nice, Fran. Also celebrating today: Met artistic director and legendary conductor James Levine turns 65. Real estate mogul Jerry Speyer is 68. Singer Jason Mraz is 31. Selma Blair turns 36. And skincare aficionado Nicholas Perricone is 60, although what with all the firming mists and wrinkle creams he uses on an hourly basis, he doesn't look a day over 57 or 58.
