A pair of high school students from South Portland, Maine, have been summonsed by police to face animal cruelty charges after recording footage of themselves allegedly microwaving a cat, and then uploading that footage to Vine.

The two 15-year-old girls, whose names have not been released, can be seen in the video putting a cat into a microwave and pressing start, then removing it moments later.

A cut in the footage has led some to believe the video is a hoax, but police say they believe the cat was indeed kept inside a working microwave for an unspecified amount of time.

The cat's owners have since turned her over to South Portland's Animal Control Officer, and she is now in the care of the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.

"The vet will do a complete checkup, but she's eating normally seems to be in fine shape," ARLGP rep Lynne McGee told WGME.

Nicknamed "Miracle," the 8-week-old kitten will soon be up for adoption.

Meanwhile, the two teens are scheduled to appear in court this November.
