The Boston Bombers Planned to Detonate More Explosives in Times Square
In a press conference this afternoon, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly revealed that the Boston bombers were on their way to detonate more explosives in Times Square before being confronted and stopped by Boston-area police.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev initially told investigators that he and his brother, Tamerlan, had hijacked a car on Thursday night and planned to go to New York to "party," but after further questioning he came clean: They were headed south intending to bomb more people, according to Mayor Bloomberg. The plan unraveled when the car they stole ran low on gas and the brothers ordered the owner to pull over and refuel. The driver escaped from the gas station, and soon thereafter the Tsarnaevs were in the car chase and shootout with police that killed Tamerlan.
Had the brothers been able to get to New York and plant their bombs, it's likely there would have been at least some carnage. Kelly said five pipe bombs and a pressure-cooker bomb similar to the ones used in the Boston attack were discovered in the stolen SUV.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev remains in fair condition at a Boston hospital.
