New York Times employee Daniel Slotnik is now chiming in on Twitter to say that the Times' website failure is due to a simple system malfunction, which contradicts a Fox Business report that the site is suffering a "cyber attack."

NYT Web site update: we're hearing that a malfunctioning system patch somehow brought down the site and email.

The Times website is back up. A tipster sent Gawker the internal announcement, which doesn't include an explanation for why it went down:

To the Newsroom,
We are recovering from this mornings outage. The website is up, though still slow for some. It should be back to normal soon.
Scoop is up, including its preview and publish functions, which took longer than others to come back.
Email working, but it might take some time for the backlog of messages to clear.
