These Are the "Most Hipster" Bands, According to Science
Have you been going through life concerned that the music you listen to just might not be cool enough? Well, wonder no more! The good people at Priceonomics have you covered.
To figure out which music is the "most hipster," the company's data scientists looked at two factors: critical acclaim and obscurity. The former metric was taken from reviews on hipster tastemaker Pitchfork, the latter based on Facebook likes of each review. Priceonomics analyzed all of Pitchfork's "best new albums" for 2013 and 2014, establishing a "hipster music index" for critically acclaimed, obscure bands. They also provide a "beer me bro index" of great bands everyone has heard of. Without further ado, here are the ten musicians every hipster worth their salt should be name-dropping:
- The Field
- Julia Holter
- Iceage
- These New Puritans
- Fuck Buttons
- DJ Rashad
- The Haxan Cloak
- Julianna Barwick
- DJ Koze
- Autre Ne Veut
And here are the ten bands not to mention if you ever want to sound cool again:
- The National
- Boards of Canada
- Justin Timberlake
- The Range
- Deerhunter
- The Knife
- My Bloody Valentine
- Chance the Rapper
- Daft Punk
- Haim
The catch: now that the secret's out, all the cool kids are listening to a new band. They're really obscure; you probably haven't heard of them.
