Million-dollar homes in Camarillo, Calif. were reduced to nothing yesterday as a wind-stoked fire in Ventura County spread over 8,000 acres, threatening 2,000 homes and causing hundreds of evacuations.

Also, boats: "I actually watched [my home] go up in flames, as well as my boat," one poor guy told ABC. Ah, spring!

Hundreds of firefighters are battling the blaze, which began early Thursday near the 101 freeway and spent the day cruising toward the coast. High winds have grounded firefighting planes, so most of the work is being done on the ground. "It's hot, dangerous, dirty work," Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Bill Nash told reporters.

There are no reports of injuries yet in Ventura County.

In the Inland Empire, several fires—one covering 3,000 acres—destroyed property and caused evacuations. Two firefighters were injured. One of those fires, which leveled two homes and damaged two others, may have been caused by a discarded cigarette.
