Lawmakers in Arizona approved a fun immigration bill that would oblige cops to stop anyone swarthy and ask them to prove their legality. Everyone, bar some right-wingers, thinks this is a bad idea. Including, as of today, the President.

The New York Times report that, speaking at a naturalization ceremony for service members in the Rose Garden, Obama said the bill works "to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe." He was making an argument that immigration has to be reformed nationwide to avoid "irresponsibility by others."

Others, we presume, like John McCain who, in a desperate battle to skew to the right in a tough primary battle for his senate seat, has endorsed the bill in an effort to get it enacted. Maverick-y.

UPDATE — 4.55PM: Jan Brewer, the Republican Governor of Arizona, just signed the bill into law according to the AP.
