The conservative Family Research Council yesterday said that a repeal of DADT will lead to soldiers having unwanted gay sex and that "homosexuals in the military are about three times as likely to commit sexual assaults as heterosexuals are."

Senior Fellow for Policy Studies at the FRC, Peter Sprigg, told reporters that his study on "homosexual assault" in the military was based on analysis of public documents with the help of former US military officers. He said that in 2009, 8.2% of sexual assaults in the military were perpetrated by gays. The most common type of gay attack, according to Sprigg, is "one in which the offender fondles or performs oral sex on a sleeping victim."

Talking Points Memo asked Sprigg if he was serious when he said that if DADT were repealed, "non-consensual same-sex assaults" would not be reported:

In a number of these cases the victim was sleeping or intoxicated," he replied. "Under those circumstances, their memory may be clouded and so the evidence may not be strong enough to stand up in a court-martial and actually prove guilt on a charge of forcible sodomy for example. Nevertheless, something inappropriate may have happened...and the victim will think twice about coming forth."

Retired Col. Dick Black, who worked in the Pentagon when DADT was drafted in 1993, clarified:

We faced this when we started tightening up on rape," Black said. "Women were intimidated about coming forward — they'd be called sluts or you know they hung out in bars or whatever."
