Psychic Octopus Unfazed by Death Threats
Like all great geniuses, Paul the psychic octopus who predicts the outcomes of Germany's soccer matches is tortured: Argentinian soccer fans who blame their team's loss on him have threatened to cook and eat him.
Paul has been Germany's soccer oracle since 2008. Now, with a perfect World Cup prediction record, Paul's fame is growing—but so, too, are the death threats. The Telegraph reports that enraged Argentinians have threatened to eat Paul as vengeance for Germany's defeat of their team, and even Germanophiles are contemplating braising Paul with olive oil and Spanish paprika, as punishment for predicting his team would lose to Spain.
But Paul's keeper Oliver Walenciak remains confident that the octopus will continue performing his remarkable act for years to come from the safety of his tank in Oberhausen as opposed to the dinner table.
He said: "There are always people who want to eat our octopus but he is not shy and we are here to protect him as well. He will survive."
