For the past few days, the Bronx Zoo has been running a poll to come up with a name for the cobra that went missing from the reptile exhibit and was found, still in the reptile exhibit, alive and well. Voters have spoken, and the snake will be called "Mia." Charming.

But by rewarding the snake that escaped with a name, what are we teaching all of the other nameless snakes who obediently stick to their cages? Only a matter of time before every animal in the Bronx Zoo stages an escape at once, a rampaging menagerie wrecking havoc on New York. Won't be so cute when grandmothers are being hunted down like ibises by fame-seeking lions. [Gothamist, image of "Mia" via Bronx Zoo]
