After weathering husband Michael Douglas' battle with cancer, Catherine Zeta-Jones has checked into a mental hospital to treat her bipolar disorder. Says her publicist:

After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II Disorder. She's feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week this week on her two upcoming films.

Bipolar II features major depressive episodes and milder manic episodes ("hypomania"). Most surprising is the fact that the publicist came out and identified her disorder, unprompted. Was someone threatening to break the news? Or did Catherine just want to be open about her illness? [People, image via Getty]
