Macy’s Steps To Martha Stewart With a Lawsuit, Like They Don’t Know She Is Hard
It's about to be a girl fight.
Reuters reports that Macy's Inc. has filed a suit against Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., claiming the company was in breach of contract this past December when it signed a deal with J. C. Penney to sell Martha Stewart Living items in J. C. Penney stores, starting in 2013.
According to a statement released by Macy's, the department store "renewed its agreement to exclusively sell Martha Stewart-branded product in categories such as cookware, kitchen utensils, bed and bath for another five years." This deal, Macy's alleges, was intended to granted Macy's exclusive merchandising rights until 2018.
Details regarding which tasteful items Martha Stewart Living was hoping to peddle both ways are not yet available, so let's pretend the corporations involved are just real people fighting over a trinket, like this:
Martha Stewart: Hey, can I have the other half of that best friend charm bracelet back?
Macy's: No way, I'm your best friend.
Martha Stewart: Yeah, I know, we're really good friends. I just want to let another best friend wear it for a while.
Macy's: You can't have more than one best friend.
Martha Stewart: Ohmygod, you're so controlling. Why are you so obsessed with me? This is exactly why you're not my best friend anymore. Do you even hear yourself? I can have as many friends as I want.
Macy's: But the charm says "Best Friends Forever." If you terminate our best-friendship before "forever," you are in breach of contract.
Martha: Ohmygod, you're seriously in love with me and it's freaking me out.
Definitely not a good thing.
