Epic fantasy flop John Carter is going to cost Disney big bucks: on Monday, the studio released a statement projecting a total loss of $200 million.

So far, the film about a former military captain who is transported to Mars, has generated $184 million in ticket sales worldwide. That is far shy from the audience needed to earn back the movie's estimated $250 million production budget, plus tens of millions more that Disney spent on advertising.

In response to the news, Disney shares immediately dropped 1 percent in after-hours trading. While the Mouse can surely take the hit, this is still a staggering flop — not to mention a delight for fans of schadenfreude.
