Taco Bell announced last Friday that its Doritos Locos Tacos — that's a taco with a nacho cheese-flavored Doritos shell — has been sold over 100 million times in the last 10 weeks, becoming the company's most successful product launch ever.

That title previously belonged to the Crunchwrap, which was unveiled in 2005 and did so well that it became a permanent menu item the following year.

In its announcement, Taco Bell puts the news in perspective by noting that "McDonald's sold its first 100 million burgers in 1958 – 18 years after the first McDonald's burger stand opened, and three years after Ray Kroc started his first McDonald's franchise."

It remained unclear if the Doritos Locos Tacos would follow in the Chruchwrap's greasy footsteps to a permanent place on the Taco Bell menu, but the company is promising that the madness is far from over: Additional Doritos shell flavors, including the fan-favorite Cool Ranch, are due to debut shortly.

UPDATE: Taco Bell rep Rob Poetsch has just emailed me this excellent correction/confirmation: "[The Doritos Locos Tacos] is a permanent addition to the Taco Bell menu, and is a platform for future flavors like Cool Ranch."
