Sesame Street Movie is Happening; If You Can Read This Sentence, You Are Too Old to Be Excited
The Hollywood Reporter announced Tuesday that a Sesame Street movie is in the works, courtesy of 20th Century Fox.
It will be Sesame Street's third big screen adaptation since the show debuted one hundred thousand years ago in 1969.
People are speculating that the project, which will be directed by Shawn Levy (Night At the Museum), was given the green light in the wake of the crushing success of 2011's film The Muppets.
But comparing the Muppets to Sesame Street is like comparing the cool baby sitter who lets you eat candy for second, third, and fourth breakfast to your boring parents who make you get vaccinated so you don't catch Rubella. Both contribute something of value to your early development, but only one of them is perfect fodder for a hilarious movie.
Both the Sesame Street crew and the Muppets were created by puppeteer Jim Henson (as were the characters of Fraggle Rock, another children's show recently tapped to be developed into a feature film).
Sesame Street recently made headlines when it was reported that music from the show was blared on a loop as a torture tactic used against Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib detainees. The movie probably won't get into all that, though.
Joey Mazzarino, a longtime writer for the series, has signed on to write the screenplay.
