On Monday, 83-year-old Edith Windsor asked the Supreme Court to review her legal challenge of the Defense of Marriage Act, which Windsor originally filed in 2010. Windsor, who has a heart condition, seeks to by-pass the U.S. Court of Appeals, who are set to hear the case in September. The New York district court has already ruled in Windsor's favor.

Windsor married her partner, Thea Spyer, in Canada in 2007, forty years after the couple became engaged. When Spyer died in 2009 of complications from multiple sclerosis, she left her property to Windsor, who then had to pay more than $363,000 in federal estate taxes because the marriage wasn't recognized under U.S. federal law.

Republicans, who, you know, are generally all about lower taxes, think this case is a just wrong wrong wrong, and are therefore fighting it though the GOP-controlled House's Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, or BLAG, which, of course they are but it's still the worst.
