Romney Doesn't Want the Public to Know How Much Money He Gives the Mormon Church
Mitt Romney's refusal to release more of his tax returns isn't about any shady offshore dealings — he just doesn't want people to know how much money he gives the Mormon Church.
In an interview with Parade Magazine that will be published Sunday, Romney explains that the Church keeps those records private. His and Ann Romney's donations are "a very personal thing between ourselves and our commitment to our God and to our church."
One of the downsides of releasing one's financial information is that this is now all public, but we had never intended to our contributions to be known.
This is the first time Romney has used charitable donations as a reason behind his withholding of documents.
Both Romneys said they love tithing. Ann admitted, "When Mitt and I give that check, I actually cry."
So, ballpark estimate on how much the Romneys give to the Mormon Church? Keep in mind it's enough to make a very rich person emotional.
