Republican Congressman Opposes Abortion 'Without Exception' Because 'Modern Technology' Has Eliminated All Risks to Mother's Life
Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) said during his final debate against Democratic rival Tammy Duckworth that he opposes all abortions "without exception," even if the mother's life is said to be at risk.
In a follow-up question by a reporter afterwards, Walsh reiterated his statement, and added that, thanks to "modern technology and science, you can't find one instance" where an abortion was required to save the life of a mother.
"There's no such exception as life of the mother," Walsh said. "And as far as health of the mother, same thing, with advances in science and technology, health of the mother has become a tool for abortions anytime under any reason."
As ThinkProgress helpfully points out, the Tea Party lawmaker is dead wrong. Pregnancy-related deaths are on the rise in the US, and, just last year, congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) took to the House floor to emotionally recount how a pregnancy nearly ended her life.
