99-Year-Old Woman Finally Gets College Degree After Settling $5 Charge
Jessie White, a 99-year-old woman from Belfast, Maine, was finally granted her college degree from Bangor's Beal College after the college's president stepped up and paid the $5 transcript fee she'd not been able to afford in 1939.
A friend of White's, after hearing about the $5 debt that had prevented White from graduating, notified Beal College and president Allen Stehle. Stehle then paid the fee himself and set up a personal graduation ceremony for White's family and friends. White received a diploma in bookkeeping and stenography.
"Never give up learning. They say when you give up learning you grow old," she said, according to ABC News. "So I don't intend to give up learning."
