Newly released testimony from the trauma surgeon who treated Dzhokhar Tsarnaev reveal that the Boston Marathon bomber incurred gruesome injuries, including a skull fracture and multiple gunshot wounds.

Dr. Stephen Ray Odom, a trauma surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, detailed the accused terrorist's injuries in a court proceeding in April. The transcript was just released:

"He has multiple gunshot wounds, the most severe of which appears to have entered through the left side inside of his mouth and exited the left face, lower face. This was a high-powered injury that has resulted in skull-base fracture, with injuries to the middle ear, the skull base, the lateral portion of his C1 vertebrae, with a significant soft-tissue injury, as well as injury to the pharynx, the mouth, and a small vascular injury that’s been treated.

He has multiple gunshots [sic] wounds to the extremities that have been treated with dressing to the lower extremities; and in the case of his left hand, he had multiple bony injuries as well that were treated with fixation and soft-tissue coverage, as well as tendon repair and vascular ligation."

Odom's testimony doesn't say whether Tsarnaev may have inflicted any of the wounds on himself, or if they were from violence associated with his capture.

The 20-year-old faces a variety of charges related to his role in the Marathon bombings, which resulted in the death of three people and the injuries of over 260, as well as the death of an MIT police officer. These charges could ultimately lead to the death penalty. Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty.
