On Saturday, two men matching the description of escaped prisoners Richard Matt and David Sweat were seen in the Allegany County town of Friendship, near New York’s border with Pennsylvania, the Guardian reports.

Authorities descended upon the remote, rural town on Sunday, but did not find the escaped inmates. According to the Guardian, New York state police say they have investigated more than 600 tips and leads since the inmates escaped earlier this month.

In addition to police officers called in to supplement the search force, civilians came to Friendship to witness the spectacle of the inmates being apprehended, the New York Times reports. They were turned away at police barriers.

The Wellsville Daily Reporter speculates that another reason for the influx of civilians to the area could be the $50,000 reward offered for information leading to the inmates’ capture.

According to the Times, it now seems unlikely that Matt and Sweat—if they are together at all—are still in Friendship.
