cityfile · 07/28/09 07:23AM

• Developer Charles Yassky has put his townhouse back on the market—and he's looking for $2 million more than he was seeking last fall. Yassky purchased 122 East 78th Street in mid-2008 for $13.2 million. He put it back on the market with Paula Del Nunzio just two weeks later for $18.9 million, before dropping the price to $16.9 million in November and eventually taking it off the market altogether in April. The 36-foot-wide manse has returned to the market with broker Carrie Chiang for $18.9 million. [Cityfile, Corcoran]
• Roberta Campbell, the wife of former Intuit CEO William Campbell, has paid $17.5 million for an 11th-floor condo at 15 Central Park West. Campbell bought the apartment from Paula Lascano, who paid $14.2 million for the four-bedroom pad in March 2008. [Real Deal]

cityfile · 02/26/09 03:21PM

Eliot Spitzer came out of hiding the other night to make an appearance at an event organized by The Atlantic, money manager Boykin Curry and his wife, interior designer Celerie Kemble. Billed as a "Not State of the Union viewing party" (and held at a townhouse owned by Russian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik), the former governor took to the mic after President Obama finished his remarks before Congress and explained to the crowd who he thought deserved blame for the current economic crisis:

Interior Designers React to the Recession

cityfile · 11/18/08 10:52AM

Did you dutifully rush out and buy the $22,000 picnic basket featured in Elle Décor a few months ago? Well, the magazine's editor Margaret Russell would like to make it clear that such items will no longer be darkening her pages: "It just seems vulgar, and vulgar is not a word I want to associate with our magazine." Russell, who was moderating an interior design panel with Cynthia Rowley, Bunny Williams, Celerie Kemble, and Annabelle Selldorf last night at the Pratt House, suggests that quilts are now the appropriate "humble" purchase, while Rowley recommends art: "That's the only thing I buy now." After seeing Rowley's home, we slightly doubt that. But we'll take her advice and resist splashing out on even her Target housewares.

Halloween 2008: Socialites Make Their Costume Plans

cityfile · 10/15/08 01:18PM

Just because the stock market is continuing to flail around, that doesn't mean people should forget this month's primary issue of national import: Who's going as what for Halloween? The Transom has helpfully surveyed the city's glitterati in order to discover what costumes we'll see at the Central Park Conservancy Halloween Ball, Allison Sarofim's party, and Susanne Bartsch's bash. While some people are as yet undecided—poor Fabiola Beracasa's been so rushed off her feet, she hasn't even had time to think, and Charlotte Ronson hasn't made up her mind either—others are all set.

Surviving the Recession in Style

cityfile · 10/01/08 08:51AM

In these difficult times, it's so tricky to know how to manage one's budget, especially when it comes to buying a fall wardrobe. (It's even trickier when even the homeless in the city are carrying Gucci shopping bags.) Luckily, we have the wisdom of socialites to guide us—lead by example, as is their birthright!—through the kind of scary decisions that now loom. For instance, dare you imperil your reputation by succumbing to the Barneys rack at Filene's Basement? What a relief: Kate Schelter says you're allowed. Celerie Kemble, for her part, counsels "going back to vintage," while Fabiola Beracasa gives permission to wear the same thing (we can hardly type it!) more than once—advice seconded by Harper's Bazaar's Mary Alice Stephenson, who claimed to have worn the same Dior gown three times! We didn't know clothes could withstand such heavy usage. [NYO]

How to Gain Entry on the 'Quest 400'

cityfile · 08/19/08 08:37AM

Last week, Quest magazine, coddler of heiresses, financiers, and other layabouts, published its annual "Quest 400," the exhaustive yet unexplained list of the society fixtures it deems worthy. Originally the "400" represented the number of guests Mrs. Astor could fit into her ballroom. Mrs. Astor is long gone, so how can one land a spot on the list today? We looked through all 20 pages to find out how to make the cut.
