Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy demands that you listen closely as he clears the air on this whole "Anthony Kennedy tried to censor a high school newspaper" thing, by blaming it on his staff. Anthony Kennedy loves kids. And newspapers!

Yesterday, fancy media types got together at the New York Times building to remember recently deceased columnist William Safire. The small talk, naturally, centered on the expensive schools where fancy media types send their kids.

A student at tony Upper East Side prep school Dalton has died after jumping from a window on the building's 11th floor. Reports indicate that a group of students witnessed the as-yet-unidentified boy's death.

A 17-year-old student at Dalton plunged to his death from an 11th floor window this morning. "Police are investigating the death, but sources said the student may have committed suicide." Update: The Daily News reports that the police "believe the student snuck into an empty dance studio on the school's 11th floor, opened the top part of the window and jumped." [NYP, related]

Anisha Lakhani, ex-teacher at Manhattan private school Dalton and author of the forthcoming Schooled—about that very world!—might write her next book about socialites, she tells the Observer. After all, the Indian-born Jersey girl has been hanging out with them lately (see exhibit A, this photo with Tinsley Mortimer) at charity dinners and the like. But maybe it's all just research:

Emily Brill, the socialite heiressblogger, went to private Manhattan prep school Dalton. What does she have to say about the forthcoming Schooled, a novel set in a private school written by ex-Dalton teacher Anisha Lakhani? Brill wants us to know that private-school preps are intellectual, and not as vapid and vicious as the Gossip Girl girls:

Dalton was in the news last week when it was revealed that not a single graduating senior had landed a spot at Harvard. According to Page Six magazine, at Dalton's graduation ceremony last month, "one mom was heard muttering, 'I won't send my grandchildren here, that's for sure.'" Fret not, Dalton parents! TABOO: A Manhattan Tutor Talks is to be an "autobiographical novel," written by an anonymous author writing under the name "Anna Taggart," whose real identity will be revealed "upon publication." Or maybe sooner. Hey, how's now?

They're tall. They think that pink, kelly, and cordovan are primary colors. They pluralize the word "philanthropy" and still insist that Trinity and Haverford are prestigious colleges. And now, after decades of wining, dining, and murdering at lame-not-lamé Upper East Side haunts like Dorrian's Red Hand, the preppies are massing downtown! All thanks to Bar Martignetti (say: "Netti") on Broome Street — founded by an eponymous set of Mario-and-Luigi brothers (profiled in the Observer last summer) — where the usual Houston hauteur has been replaced by I'm-okay-you're-okay Dalton-Horace Mann rapprochement.
