Federal officials announced on Wednesday that the 2013 fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, that left 15 people dead and 160 others wounded was caused by a “criminal act.” Twelve of those killed in the explosion were first responders.

On Thursday, the NYPD arrested five people in connection with the East Village gas explosion that killed two people and leveled three buildings last spring. Four were charged with involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors said that the building owner’s greed and willingness to take shortcuts caused the loss of life.

In 2013, fifteen people were killed and more than 260 injured after a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, exploded. Investigators still have not determined the cause of the fire that triggered the explosion, but a federal report released last week found that 19 plants in Texas alone are located in similarly dangerous proximity—less than half a mile—to schools, nursing homes, and housing.

At least one person is dead and several others injured—including a child—after a possible gas explosion caused the collapse of a building in Brooklyn on Saturday, NY1 reports.
