This memo just went out to NYT staffers, informing them that managing editor Jill Abramson is stepping down temporarily in order to take a turn running the "news part of the website." Three other top editors will take turns at her job in the meantime. Bill Keller tries to preemptively dismiss the speculation that will result from this but uh, sure looks like some sort of job tryout. "OPTICS."

AOL hired an army of underemployed music lovers to interview bands at South by Southwest. But the citizen journalists, paid $50 per story, are missing their deadlines, so AOL sent a panicked mass email (below).

NYT Hires New Chief Flack

Longtime NYT Co. PR chief Catherine Mathis left the paper for a less stressful job last August. Now the company has finally replaced her with Bob Christie, from Dow Jones, who is a fairly sane guy in our experience. Also perhaps he brings some scandalous Rupert Murdoch secrets?
