Julia Allison Out At Star

Ryan Tate · 06/18/08 07:27AM

It's another sad breakup for Julia Allison. The fameball's sweetheart, six-figure gig as editor-at-large for Star magazine has come to a close, the Post's Keith Kelly is reporting. A few months after a fling with AM New York, the self-promoting young dating columnist was hired one year ago by Star under the tenure of American Media editorial director Bonnie Fuller. Her work for the tabloid consisted not of writing, but of showing up on cable news shows to talk about, say, the Texas polygamists ("I was sitting there seriously disturbed"), or about singer Britney Spears' love life ("the guy is a user, a loser and a mooch"). With Fuller gone, save for her own editor-at-large gig, Allison's yearlong contract was allowed to expire. Star isn't talking publicly about exactly why that is.

Charles Forman is a Bit of a Fameball

Sheila · 06/17/08 02:31PM

Our newest person of interest is Iminlikewithyou's Charles "Chuck" Forman, who was recently featured in a techboy photo spread in Esquire and has been dating New York dating columnist and Star talking head Julia Allison for the past three months. Scratch that—he's a shameless self-promoter! SURPRISE. He also chills with Kevin Rose of Digg and hangs out at the Founders Club with headphones on. (And Julia Allison can't quite bring herself to call him her boyfriend yet—she recently blogged that "l may be a late blooming female commitment-phobe.")

Julia Allison's German Press: "Ich Bin Carrie Bradshaw 2.0"

Sheila · 06/16/08 04:11PM

Germany, for reasons that elude us, is going crazy for New York dating columnist/Star talking head Julia Allison. Perhaps because she seized on the opportunity of the new Sex and the City movie to brand herself as the "new" Carrie Bradshaw. (The media loves it when you just go ahead and tell them what the angle is. Saves us a ton of work and thinking!) JA had a German (commenter Swifter!) translate the unintentionally humorous "I am Carrie Bradshaw 2.0" article. "Actually, she stresses, she is a 'sociology, biology and psychology lady journalist.'"

Journalists Stuck On Airplane, Chaos Ensues

Richard Lawson · 06/16/08 10:03AM

Our intrepid video fella Richard Blakeley was on a plane full of journalists headed to a Thrillist press event in Las Vegas over the weekend when disaster struck. Due to the crazypants thunderstorms barreling through the region, the plane had to make an unscheduled stop in Rochester, NY. Naturally Blakeley whipped out his camera and filmed the madness, capturing a veritable who's who of journalist types, from the Post's Justin Rocket Silverman, to Julia Allison from Star magazine (hiding coyly from the camera), to The Huffington Post's Rachel Sklar, as they coped with the ordeal. The most important thing we can learn from this video? I'mInLikeWithYou.com's Charles Forman pees sitting down. Clip is above.

Help Julia Allison Find Her Hard Drive!

ian spiegelman · 06/15/08 09:03AM

Star editor-at-large Julia Allison needs your help. Her pal, heiress Meghan Asha, absentmindedly left Julia's external hard drive on the subway on Friday, perhaps lost forever in the dank bowels of NYC. Upon said hard drive was "every video I've ever taken (as well as every photo before 2006) … and no back up. None. Everything gone … literally hundreds of videos and photos, every family event, every birthday, every lip dub I never posted, every sex tape (kidding) … gone. I was in shock the entire day - I've always been the scrapbook-kind-of-girl, and memories (if you haven't noticed) are incredibly important to me." What can you do?

Kevin Rose no longer single — but who's he dating?

Owen Thomas · 06/11/08 04:20PM

San Francisco's Web 2.0 playboy, Kevin Rose, has been laying low since his much-publicized affair with Internet notoriety provider Julia Allison in Miami (shown here, in a previously unpublished photo, with Rose). But on Facebook yesterday, Rose took the word "single" off his profile. A tipster says Rose is dating again, but we haven't heard the lucky lady's name yet. We're guessing she's a newcomer to town, since Rose's Diggnation cohost, Alex Albrecht, once drunkenly noted that Rose has dated quite a few locals. Rose's Facebook update, after the jump:

Worthwhile Gizmos

Hamilton Nolan · 06/11/08 12:26PM

Here's a useful thing: Mike's Hard Lemonade has a neato promotional toy on its website that will let you insert your own name and picture into a news clip, then send that clip to your boss as evidence of why you can't come in to work today. In unrelated news, Julia Allison won't make it to work today; she's been stuck on a spinning carnival ride! Watch this breaking news now! [via Adrants]

The Sisterhood of the Chronic Oversharers

Richard Lawson · 06/11/08 10:15AM

When she sees a fellow media punching bag in distress, Julia Allison will rush to defend them. The dating columnist and fake Star magazine editor, so criticized by nasty blog commenters for being talentless and and fame-whoring, was on the E! show Chelsea Lately last night, discussing, among other things, Tori Spelling. Spelling, an "actress" who is only "famous" because of some random bits of luck (daddy was a zillionaire TV producer), is often under attack, also from nasty blog commenters, for her lack of talent, her fame-grubbing, and, yes, her looks. Chelsea Lately host Chelsea Handler and another panel guest piled on in typical fashion, but Julia, seeing her quasi-celebrity sister in trouble, tried to rescue poor Tori by saying something about how she liked her recent book, sTORItelling. Julia said she read it on the plane on the way to LA and found it quite funny. (Though, um, update! Does that mean Julia Allison can read in her sleep??) She also defended, sort of, Spelling's looks by sputtering "she's apparently really cute in person!" Clip is above.

Why are Jakob Lodwick and Charles Forman in Esquire?

Nicholas Carlson · 06/06/08 12:20PM

We don't own a smoking jacket or get manicures, so were unaware that New York wantrepreneurs Charles Forman of Iminlikewithyou and fired Connected Ventures cofounder Jakob Lodwick appear in the latest issue of Esquire until Forman pointed it out to us this morning. "Good to see you yesterday," Forman managed to say before asking: "Are you going to put my Esquire thing on Valleywag?" Fine. But only because it gives us a chance to examine what, exactly fellow wantrepreneur Julia Allison sees in him. Yes, the pair are dating. (Though we hear she sometimes forgets his name when introducing him at parties.)

Digg meetup more like a concert in a land without women

Nicholas Carlson · 06/05/08 12:00PM

The line to get into Digg's meetup and live filming of Diggnation last night in Brooklyn went around the block. Inside, the joint was packed with dudes drinking beer, waving around iPhones, and wearing T-shirts. There were maybe like 10 or 15 women. Just as rare: Microsoft Zune users. Despite Microsoft's sponsorship, when Revision3 CEO Jim Louderback tried to give away Zune T-shirts, the crowd only booed. Julia Allison's entourage, Kevin Rose, and more in our photo gallery.

Is Julia Allison Finally Over?

Sheila · 06/04/08 04:29PM

Julia Allison wasn't always a Star talking head making six figures with a reality show in the works. Back in 2006, she was just a struggling dating columnist who had the good (or bad) fortune to show up at our publisher's Halloween party, wearing a dress made out of condoms. We've charted the traffic of all Julia-related posts, and her popularity appears to be waning—she seems to have peaked in January.) After the jump, the traffic spikes explained by our statisticians Richard Blakeley and Nick McGlynn.

Twitter lets us stalk Facebook's Dave Morin through New York like we're Google's Brittany Bohnet

Nicholas Carlson · 06/02/08 05:40PM

The rift between Google and Facebook has been dug deep by Facebook's executive poachings, ultimate frisbee triumphs and partnership with Microsoft. But across that chasm reaches the love between Googler Brittany Bohnet and Facebook's Dave Morin. While my boss tracked down Bohnet the old-fashioned way at Marissa Mayer's birthday festivities, I kept tabs on my prey, Morin, via Twitter, virtually stalking him on a trip through New York that took him as high as a helicopter over Herald Square and as low as a night out with New York's most notorious gossip.

"It's Eerie How Similar SATC Is To Our Lives"

Sheila · 06/02/08 09:18AM

The self-branding opportunities that Julia Allison, New York dating columnist, can squeeze out of Sex and the City are almost over, now that the movie's premiered. Here's one final attempt!

Mary Rambin Shot Down at Sex and the City Premiere

Richard Lawson · 05/28/08 09:38AM

Amid all the glamor and glitz and lady empowerment, an unsisterly tragedy struck at the Sex and the City movie premiere last night. Three friends, we'll call them Julia Allison, Meghan Asha, and Mary Rambin, got all gussied up and trotted off (with their upcoming reality show camera crew in tow) to enjoy a night of fabulousity and star gazing at the much buzzed about event. Julia the dating columnist (just like Carrie!) and Meghan (tech heiress and socialite) got in without a hitch, as they already had their tickets secure. But then, the clouds darkened and the low keening of travesties of old lilted across the red carpet, dancing grimly with the spring breeze. Mary, the handbag designer and big sister of actress Leven, was denied entrance and abandoned by her gal pals.

Worst Overshare Anywhere Ever

Ryan Tate · 05/28/08 12:01AM

You'll recall Harvard junior Lena Chen as one of our official compulsive oversharers. She's a sex blogger whose ex leaked naked pictures of her once. Now, in addition to the sex blog, she's got a more personal blog intended to correct the fact that Chen is "famous on the internet for all the wrong things." This makes it the perfect venue for pictures of... well, I'll just say it: of Chen right after getting "a facial." Demerits to Chen for posting the photo to the wrong blog, thus making it horribly oversharey. But points to the protocelebrity for the following: Releasing the sex pic herself so it can't be used against her; writing a brief caption that frames the picture as both more feminist and kinky than it appears; chipping away at the shame around a taboo sex act (end facial oppression!) and, most importantly, putting the fear of obsolescence into Julia Allison, the former Georgetown sex columnist now pulling down six figures as a Star editor at large. Disaster At The Sex And The City Premiere?

Ryan Tate · 05/27/08 08:14PM

No question, the Sex And The City movie premiere at Radio City Music Hall is going swimmingly for some people. Fameball Julia Allison and her buddies Mary Rambin and Megan Asha, for example, got inside the hall and snapped photos like the one at left of cast member Sarah Jessica Parker (from Rambin) and now appear to be happily seated next to actress Ashley Olsen. Vogue editor Anna Wintour is present and accounted for. But a line of ticketholders stretching for an entire city block was turned away, according to a disgruntled email tipster, who wrote: "There was a near riot of Louboutin clicking girls to the security windows in the front... Some were in near tears waving their tickets and yelling into their cells." Hopefully the lady from Singapore who bought a fake ticket for $19,000, but then got a free authentic one, wasn't among the crowd, because this would push her over the edge. I told you this was going to get ugly. Full email report after the jump.

Emily Gould on Julia Allison (on Julia Allison): "Attention Is My Drug"

Pareene · 05/21/08 04:28PM

Hey, bloggers! The countdown to the three-day weekend clusterfuck of examining and reexamining former Gawker editor Emily Gould's forthcoming New York Times Magazine piece may be cut short! Because The Observer has a copy, and it'll probably be online tomorrow. You are forewarned: there is a photo of a blogger at a laptop, blogging. It's just Emily's hands, though. According to Matt Haber, the piece is "heavily diaristic." Do you want to read about Julia Allison? Sure you do.

Karaoke Becomes Instant Blog World Meme

Hamilton Nolan · 05/19/08 04:29PM

When the Daily News needed to illustrate a story on karaoke bars, guess who appeared in the photo? Julia Allison, omnipresent media figure and karaoke aficionado! Her face is the mandated illustration for at least one-third of all breaking lifestyle stories within the confines of Manhattan. And her singing partner is none other than Tumblr founder David Karp, no doubt belting out "Ride of the Valkyries" as undercover PepsiCo advertising operatives furiously scribble notes. Though this song lasted but a moment, the blog debate over the song will surely consume hundreds of hours. Julia Allison's Tumblr'd question that night: "What are the top Geek songs of all time?" Oh, the synchronicity. [via NYDN]
