Katy Perry's Documentary Reveals Nothing About Katy Perry

Rich Juzwiak · 07/05/12 03:50PM

The 90-minute, needlessly 3D documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me is a fantastic document of how guarded our superstars come in 2012. There's more revealed about Madonna in a single snort or eye roll in 1991's Truth or Dare than there is Katy Perry in the entirety of Part of Me. We learn that being a famous singer is Perry's childhood dream come true, that her goal is to make people smile, that she's not yet ready for kids. The biggest revelation is that she looks fantastic out of makeup, and if the words in her Proactive commercial are true, even that shouldn't come as a surprise. No warts at all.

Ted's Titular Bear Is a Sex Symbol to Some, an Abomination to Others

Louis Peitzman · 06/30/12 01:32PM

If your reaction to the Ted trailer wasn't instant arousal, there's a good chance you're not a plushie. But if you are, in fact, a stuffed animal fetishist, Seth MacFarlane's first full-length live-action feature is kind of the holy grail. This is a mainstream film with a talking, highly sexualized teddy bear.

How to Get Americans Back to the Movies

Hamilton Nolan · 06/18/12 03:28PM

Oh heck, a new survey says that going to the movies is a "frequent source of entertainment" for only 3% of your fellow Americans. Three dang percent. What the hey are you doing with your time now, Americans? Masturbating? Where, and in what ways? Do you have pictures? That's not the point. The point is that the movies must be saved. But how?

Is Lola Versus a Bad Movie, or Are All Men Sexist?

Leah Beckmann · 06/12/12 11:50AM

Lola Versus, a rom-com-ish movie about a woman who goes looking for herself after she's dumped the same day she tries on her wedding dress, opened this past weekend to bad numbers and worse reviews. Starring Greta Gerwig, directed by Daryl Wein and co-written by Zoe Lister Jones, it brought in a meager $31,815 (in New York and L.A. only, but still) and trailed behind its same-genre competitor, Safety Not Guaranteed.

Yep, Madagascar 3 Outgrossed Prometheus

Louis Peitzman · 06/10/12 01:24PM

A 3D sci-fi epic written by Damon Lindelof and directed by Ridley Scott, complete with tie-in to the iconic Alien franchise — you'd think Prometheus would have easily taken the box office this weekend. And yes, it did well, but in the end, it couldn't keep up with Dreamworks' CGI talking animals in Madagascar 3.

Trippy Mash-Up Trailer Combines Total Recall With Total Recall

Louis Peitzman · 05/28/12 03:26PM

It's easy to dismiss most remakes as useless retreads of the original, but the new Total Recall actually looks like a fun update of the 1990 film. On the other hand, is it really all that different from the first?

The Longest Day: How to Spend Your Memorial Day Weekend on Netflix

Louis Peitzman · 05/27/12 02:52PM

For many of us, Memorial Day means two things: sleeping in and not getting mail. But in the spirit of commemorating fallen soldiers, wouldn't it be appropriate to watch some heavy war films and remember the sacrifices made by our troops? Plus, with endless streaming movie options, you don't even have to leave the house to do it.

The Avengers Sunk Your Battleship

Louis Peitzman · 05/20/12 03:12PM

Still in the number one spot this week, The Avengers earned another $55.1 million, well outperforming Battleship, which took in a measly $25.3 million. That might not sound too bad, but given Battleship's budget, it's pretty embarrassing. In fact, this is the worst domestic opening ever for a film with a budget of at least $200 million.

The Avengers Broke the $1 Billion Mark

Louis Peitzman · 05/13/12 02:51PM

A million dollars isn't cool. You know what— oh, whatever, you know the rest. The Avengers continues to dominate the box office, both domestic and international. This weekend, the superhero movie earned $103.2 million here and another $95.4 million overseas. Add that to the money it's already made, and yep, we've crossed the $1 billion line.
