It wasn't irony so much as a stereotypical metaphor, but it was unquestionably worse than rain.

A couple in Essex, England, preparing to exchange vows was forced to delay their wedding ceremony after a "blood soaked man" stormed into their church having just cut off his own testicles with a pair of scissors.

A guest who arrived at All Saints Church in Hutton ahead of the bride and groom told the Brentwood Weekly News that police had cordoned off the area following reports of a man who had "chopped his testicles off" going wild inside the church and "chucking chairs around."

"When I went in the church," said the guest, "I saw something on the floor which I could only describe as flesh, which I thought was part of his arm but that was one of his testicles."

Ultimately, the newlyweds-to-be decided not to let a little self-mutilation spoil their special day, and the ceremony went ahead almost as planned.

Essex Police later released a statement saying the man was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries, and then "referred for a mental health assessment."
