The world is tuning in with disbelief at House Republicans, who are still preparing to blow up everyone's precious global economy. House Republicans, meanwhile, are passing around a dumb blog post from RedState's Erick Erickson outlining supposedly good reasons for causing a Depression! Good heavens.

Here's what's inside the post, "Dear House Republicans, This is Your 'Time For Choosing,'" that the House GOP caucus is literally handing around in its meeting today.

Now is a time for choosing. Now is your time for choosing. As I pointed out to John Boehner yesterday, despite what the pundits in Washington are telling you, it is you and not Obama who hold most of the cards. Obama has a legacy to worry about. Should the United States lose its bond rating, it will be called the "Obama Depression." Congress does not get pinned with this stuff.

What's worse: The cold-hearted cynicism of simply allowing a depression so as to avoid political blame for the issue they chose to flap their gums about for months at a time and haven't conceded a penny on ever since, or the fact that polls show Erickson's blame-game argument to be false? Maybe well into the future, events would be remembered by their presidents... or they'd be remembered by how House Republicans shitcanned their party into oblivion by doing something so stupid. We'll all be dead in the future, anyway, so it won't matter.

But wait a minute! We thought that all of that talk about a possible depression was nonsense, and that Democrats and Wall Street and businesses and the Federal Reserve and anyone who's not a fucking idiot were just scaremongering? Erick goes on to make this point next, even if it completely contradicts his first point:

First, as the hours go on, the doom and gloom scenarios are going to get worse. By the end of July, Goldman Sachs, Ben Bernanke, and Timmy Geithner are going to tell you the world will end unless you raise the debt ceiling.

They did it with TARP too.

And now we know that the amount of money used in TARP was far less than allocated and a lot of the TARP situation involved Hank Paulson forcing solvent banks to play along. Oh, and a great many Republicans were primaried out of office.

Do not believe the doom and gloom. Wise decisions are never made when premised on fear.

Wise decisions can absolutely be premised on fear, if you're too dense to figure out right vs. wrong through the typical route of fact-based reasoning. Like if you're going to burn down a gasoline-soaked house with a match for no reason whatsoever, and all of the adults around you try to scare you out of doing it, because it's an insane and arbitrary thing to do that's not in response to any imminent crisis. Then you'd be making a wise decision to back down because everyone's screaming at you.

So that's what House Republicans are passing around in their meeting today. Yikes? Mmhmm, yup. Anyway, enjoy the latest funny picture of Eric Cantor.
