Recovering Diva Anne Hathaway Cops to Grief, Bitchiness in Riveting New Profile

STV · 09/10/08 12:05PM

Washing and braiding and overstyling that man right out of her hair, cover girl Anne Hathaway offered W Magazine her most candid interview yet about the travails of her relationship with Rafaello Follieiri. But for all the catalogged heartbreak and homelessness anecdotes and advice gleaned here from her de facto Italian publicist Steve Carell, we're taken even more aback by Hathaway's stirring candor about rebounding on the job — when she's not chewing off her director's head:

Follieri to Prison, Piven to New York?

Follieri May Plead Guilty To Swindling

Hamilton Nolan · 09/09/08 10:43AM

Oh, how the fake mighty have fallen. Raffaello Follieri, who just months ago was a high-flying "investment" operator with Ron Burkle's money and Anne Hathaway on his arm, "is near an agreement to plead guilty to fraud and money-laundering charges," according to the Wall Street Journal. Follieri hasn't previously admitted guilt, but the charges against him were fairly damning. Follieri would join his father as a convicted swindler. But his decision to settle (if he actually does) doesn't mean that he couldn't have constructed a defense for himself:

Today in Toronto Hell: Anne Hathaway's Shoes, Michael Cera's Backpack, Guy Ritchie's Vision

STV · 09/08/08 07:15PM

The Toronto Film Festival is right about at its midway point — an essential milestone from which to take stock of noteworthy developments and drama that we couldn't help but watch smolder from Defamer HQ. And while some of our principal plotlines either have yet to unwind (Paris and her doc show up tomorrow) or were resolved to our satisfaction (The Wrestler wins the fest's distribution sweepstakes), there remains a bundle of loose ends requiring maintenance and attention from a distance. That's Canada for you! · A National Post writer went to the party for Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, where Michael Cera bumped around wearing his backpack and Kat Dennings, ahem, "gave off the unpretentious dewiness that is a visa of sorts to the country of bigger fame for starlets-on-the-climb." And if that fails, there's always Robert Rodriguez's hot tub.· Tired of his besties at Warner Bros., Patrick Goldstein upgraded in Toronto with newfound documentary sensation LeBron James. The NBA star is featured in Hoop Dreams-ish coming-of-age saga More Than a Game, which tracks five kids — including James (it was only six years ago!) — from their "decrepit inner-city gym" to their contention for a national high school basketball championship. It apparently made James cry and made producer/music mogul Jimmy Iovine call Goldstein, who pimps it lovingly, noting that Lionsgate might be at the front of the line to pick it up. · At last night's Sony Pictures Classics dinner, Anne Hathaway's shoes deflected attention from Charlie Kaufman's public awkwardness. That was nice of them! · Which reminds us: Celebrities! Starlets! Ptooey! Canada for the Canadians! [Via David Poland] · Does anyone up there has a spare camera he or she can lend to Jeffrey Wells? "Three young apes" stole hisand his iPhone. And he missed The Wrestler. At least buy the guy a drink or something if you see him. · Jesus — first The Wrestler, now Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Todd McCarthy is turning into Harry Knowles. · Tasting a hint of assent from critics and the public alike, Guy Ritchie OD'd on confidence and announced an entire Rocknrolla franchise. Last we heard, Joel Silver was still shopping the first one.

How to Get Into Anne Hathaway's Pants: 'Vaccinate Some Kids, Build a House'

STV · 09/03/08 01:05PM

Beyond the impressively reported (if eye-glazing) details of Raffaello Follieri's shady dealings with everyone from the Catholic Church to Ron Burkle, the accused con man and Holy Beancounter's lengthy profile in the new issue of Vanity Fair features essential insights into how one might court his ex Anne Hathaway. For starters, thick Italian charm and a dozen roses go a long way to balance out being an hour late for your first date. Manhattan penthouses are OK, and six-figure vacations are especially sexy — especially those including an audience with the Pope and/or a stiffed host suing to collect rental fees. Forget all that, though; at the end of the day, nothing gets Hathaway hotter than a humanitarian:

Rafaello Follieri: Con Man or Delusional?

cityfile · 09/03/08 09:25AM

Rafaello Follieri, the 30-year-old Italian who's currently languishing in an eight-foot cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan, made the biggest mistake of his life not when he lied, cheated, and spent millions of dollars of other people's money on private jets and suites at the Ritz, but when he hooked up with Anne Hathaway, according to Michael Shnayerson's in-depth article in Vanity Fair. While the doomed smooth-talker displayed an incredible knack for deception—the apotheosis of which came in September 2006 with his appearance onstage at the Global Initiative gathering with Bill Clinton, who congratulated Follieri on his "good works" and thanked him for a completely imaginary $50 million pledge—his business dealings may only have caught the attention of the feds because of Hathaway.

Anne Hathaway's Trembling Feelings For Barack Obama

Ryan Tate · 08/27/08 07:43AM
  • Anne Hathaway: "I was kind of afraid of [Barack] Obama the first time I saw him... I was afraid to trust him and I was afraid to have hope when I first kind of became aware of him. It was around the time that he gave his speech on race that I just said 'I can't deny how I feel about you, Barack Obama.'" Please just stop talking, Anne. This is almost worse than the Madonna/McCain/Hitler thing. [AP]

'Burned' Anne Hathaway Learns to Love Again With Unlikely Partner Barack Obama

STV · 08/26/08 05:00PM

If you thought Anne Hathaway had bad luck with boyfriends, we're hearing more today about her even trickier track record with politicians: Skeevy, lying, disingenuous heartbreakers whose hollow promises ring in her ears long after they've been exiled to retirement, disgrace and worse. Honey, we know! We even relate a bit to her early skepticism of Sen. Barack Obama, recalled this week in Denver: "I was kind of afraid of Obama the first time I saw him. ... And I was afraid to trust him and I was afraid to have hope when I first kind of became aware of him." But now, with most of her diaries, nude photos and other personal effects safely in federal custody, what matters most is who's minding the store in Washington. Which means exactly the mile-high rebound it sounds like — coming around on Obama and signing on for the long election slog ahead. And feeling good doing it, if her new, unapologetic take on celebrity politics is any indication:

I Can't Believe I Gave Brody Jenner My Phone Number

Douglas Reinhardt · 08/20/08 05:25PM

Beloved actress Anne Hathaway embarked on a mini walk of shame outside of Coco De Ville Tuesday night. The Get Smart star, who recently split from con man & Zach Braff look alike Raffaello Follieri, allegedly had a lapse in judgment and gave reality TV maven Brody Jenner her number. At the valet station, Hathaway confessed to a BFF that she was suckered in by Jenner's frat boy charm. Hathaway sighed, "He had a backwards hat on and, well, I don't know....He just seemed like a guy who wouldn't be able pull off an elaborate con involving the Vatican, which is exactly the kind of guy I'm looking to rebound with. And he was wearing a backwards hat."

The Once-Great Jonathan Demme's Cold Streak Continues With 'Rachel Getting Married'

Mark Graham · 08/12/08 07:50PM

It wasn't so long ago that Jonathan Demme was considered one of Hollywood's preeminent directors. Actually, scratch that — after checking out his IMDB profile, we now realize that the last time he made a film that had any sort of cultural impact (or, for that matter, even approached the state of being "watchable") was 1993's landmark Academy Award winner Philadelphia. Over the last fifteen years, his resume includes such stinkers as Beloved, The Truth About Charlie and The Manchurian Candidate (in the spirit of fairness, the documentary The Agronomist was pretty decent). Which is why after seeing Demme sputter out with a couple of ill-fated remakes, we were mildly excited for his return to directing an original script, the Anne Hathaway vehicle Rachel Getting Married. Emphasis on the word "were."

Anne Hathaway Nude Pictures Emerge as Latest FollieriGate Treasure

STV · 08/04/08 01:35PM

The hits keep on coming in the doomed romance between Anne Hathaway and Raffaello Follieri, from the latter of whose New York penthouse the feds have purged everything from abandoned dogs to Hathaway's diaries and now, if rumors are true, a collection of Hathaway soft-core commissioned by Follieri himself. It's nothing we haven't seen before in Brokeback Mountain or Havoc, presumably, but God's CFO wants what God's CFO wants. Tastefully smutty details after the jump.

How Long Before Anne Hathaway's Nude Photos Leak?

Hamilton Nolan · 08/04/08 10:26AM

Hasn't Anne Hathaway been through enough, you fiends? The pixie-ish actress is just getting a break from the nonstop tabloid coverage of her breakup with her ex, Italian playboy and scam artist Raffaello Follieri, and his subsequent arrest for fraud. But even though Follieri's in jail, the relationship is still haunting Hathaway: the rumor is that he had a stash of nude photos of the actress, which are now in the hands of the FBI and...maybe somewhere else?

Feds Attach Lovesick Anne Hathaway to 'Princess Diaries 3: The Oily Years'

STV · 07/24/08 11:10AM

The dissolved love affair between Anne Hathaway and would-be Vatican real-estate magnate Raffaello Follieri has strewn more than its fair share of heart-rending detritus through the young actress's life. But no abandoned dog or red-carpet ambush wields the devastating potential of Hathaway's private diaries, which were the prize catch among Pope photos, antique Bibles and other keepsakes evidence reportedly seized by the FBI in a recent raid on Follieri's residence. The confiscations come amid word that Follieri is struggling with his new digs at the Metropolitan Correction Center in New York, where his calls to Hathaway go unreturned and the Get Smart star's rumored compliance with the feds has zapped the last of the fraud suspect's oily mojo:

How Jailbait Anne Hathaway Maybe Lured Her Ex Into Prison

Ryan Tate · 07/24/08 05:36AM

Just a couple of months ago, Italian con-man Rafaello Follieri was all set to make a clean getaway. He knew the feds were investigating his alleged scheme to defraud investors like Bill Clinton. He was in Europe and could have stayed there. But his then-girlfriend Anne Hathaway kept calling and insisting they needed to talk about their future. Being the sort of dope who writes a $215,000 check against an account with $39 in it, and thus not realizing Hathaway was about to dump him, Follieri said, shucks, why not. A few days after his return to the states, he was in federal custody. And now his friends are wondering if it wasn't a big setup (on behalf of the feds) by an evil Hollywood actress!

Jailed Anne Hathaway Ex Talking Deal

Ryan Tate · 07/18/08 05:45AM

"Assistant US Attorney Reed Brodsky has estimated [Rafaello] Follieri would likely spend up to nine years behind bars if a jury convicts him of wire fraud and money laundering." [Post]
