Washing and braiding and overstyling that man right out of her hair, cover girl Anne Hathaway offered W Magazine her most candid interview yet about the travails of her relationship with Rafaello Follieiri. But for all the catalogged heartbreak and homelessness anecdotes and advice gleaned here from her de facto Italian publicist Steve Carell, we're taken even more aback by Hathaway's stirring candor about rebounding on the job — when she's not chewing off her director's head:

• Anne Hathaway broke up with Rafaello Follieri by speakerphone, saying, "you were the love of my life." Then he was arrested while she went to promote her movie in Mexico. Seeya, let's stay friends 'k?! [Us, Vanity Fair]

• Raffaello Follieri is expected to appear in court later this morning and plead guilty to wire fraud and money laundering, a deal that will land him a jail term of 51 to 63 months. [NYP]

Oh, how the fake mighty have fallen. Raffaello Follieri, who just months ago was a high-flying "investment" operator with Ron Burkle's money and Anne Hathaway on his arm, "is near an agreement to plead guilty to fraud and money-laundering charges," according to the Wall Street Journal. Follieri hasn't previously admitted guilt, but the charges against him were fairly damning. Follieri would join his father as a convicted swindler. But his decision to settle (if he actually does) doesn't mean that he couldn't have constructed a defense for himself:

It apparently made James cry and made producer/music mogul Jimmy Iovine call Goldstein, who pimps it lovingly, noting that Lionsgate might be at the front of the line to pick it up. · At last night's Sony Pictures Classics dinner, Anne Hathaway's shoes deflected attention from Charlie Kaufman's public awkwardness. Beyond the impressively reported (if eye-glazing) details of Raffaello Follieri's shady dealings with everyone from the Catholic Church to Ron Burkle, the accused con man and Holy Beancounter's lengthy profile in the new issue of Vanity Fair features essential insights into how one might court his ex Anne Hathaway. For starters, thick Italian charm and a dozen roses go a long way to balance out being an hour late for your first date. Manhattan penthouses are OK, and six-figure vacations are especially sexy — especially those including an audience with the Pope and/or a stiffed host suing to collect rental fees. Forget all that, though; at the end of the day, nothing gets Hathaway hotter than a humanitarian:

Rafaello Follieri, the 30-year-old Italian who's currently languishing in an eight-foot cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan, made the biggest mistake of his life not when he lied, cheated, and spent millions of dollars of other people's money on private jets and suites at the Ritz, but when he hooked up with Anne Hathaway, according to Michael Shnayerson's in-depth article in Vanity Fair. While the doomed smooth-talker displayed an incredible knack for deception—the apotheosis of which came in September 2006 with his appearance onstage at the Global Initiative gathering with Bill Clinton, who congratulated Follieri on his "good works" and thanked him for a completely imaginary $50 million pledge—his business dealings may only have caught the attention of the feds because of Hathaway.

If you thought Anne Hathaway had bad luck with boyfriends, we're hearing more today about her even trickier track record with politicians: Skeevy, lying, disingenuous heartbreakers whose hollow promises ring in her ears long after they've been exiled to retirement, disgrace and worse. Honey, we know! We even relate a bit to her early skepticism of Sen. Barack Obama, recalled this week in Denver: "I was kind of afraid of Obama the first time I saw him. ... And I was afraid to trust him and I was afraid to have hope when I first kind of became aware of him." But now, with most of her diaries, nude photos and other personal effects safely in federal custody, what matters most is who's minding the store in Washington. Which means exactly the mile-high rebound it sounds like — coming around on Obama and signing on for the long election slog ahead. And feeling good doing it, if her new, unapologetic take on celebrity politics is any indication:

The Get Smart star, who recently split from con man & Zach Braff look alike Raffaello Follieri, allegedly had a lapse in judgment and gave reality TV maven Brody Jenner her number. At the valet station, Hathaway confessed to a BFF that she was suckered in by Jenner's frat boy charm. Hathaway sighed, "He had a backwards hat on and, well, I don't know....He just seemed like a guy who wouldn't be able pull off an elaborate con involving the Vatican, which is exactly the kind of guy I'm looking to rebound with. And he was wearing a backwards hat."

It wasn't so long ago that Jonathan Demme was considered one of Hollywood's preeminent directors. Actually, scratch that — after checking out his IMDB profile, we now realize that the last time he made a film that had any sort of cultural impact (or, for that matter, even approached the state of being "watchable") was 1993's landmark Academy Award winner Philadelphia. Over the last fifteen years, his resume includes such stinkers as Beloved, The Truth About Charlie and The Manchurian Candidate (in the spirit of fairness, the documentary The Agronomist was pretty decent). Which is why after seeing Demme sputter out with a couple of ill-fated remakes, we were mildly excited for his return to directing an original script, the Anne Hathaway vehicle Rachel Getting Married. Emphasis on the word "were."

The hits keep on coming in the doomed romance between Anne Hathaway and Raffaello Follieri, from the latter of whose New York penthouse the feds have purged everything from abandoned dogs to Hathaway's diaries and now, if rumors are true, a collection of Hathaway soft-core commissioned by Follieri himself. It's nothing we haven't seen before in Brokeback Mountain or Havoc, presumably, but God's CFO wants what God's CFO wants. Tastefully smutty details after the jump.

Hasn't Anne Hathaway been through enough, you fiends? The pixie-ish actress is just getting a break from the nonstop tabloid coverage of her breakup with her ex, Italian playboy and scam artist Raffaello Follieri, and his subsequent arrest for fraud. But even though Follieri's in jail, the relationship is still haunting Hathaway: the rumor is that he had a stash of nude photos of the actress, which are now in the hands of the FBI and...maybe somewhere else?

The dissolved love affair between Anne Hathaway and would-be Vatican real-estate magnate Raffaello Follieri has strewn more than its fair share of heart-rending detritus through the young actress's life. Just a couple of months ago, Italian con-man Rafaello Follieri was all set to make a clean getaway. He knew the feds were investigating his alleged scheme to defraud investors like Bill Clinton. He was in Europe and could have stayed there. But his then-girlfriend Anne Hathaway kept calling and insisting they needed to talk about their future. Being the sort of dope who writes a $215,000 check against an account with $39 in it, and thus not realizing Hathaway was about to dump him, Follieri said, shucks, why not. A few days after his return to the states, he was in federal custody. And now his friends are wondering if it wasn't a big setup (on behalf of the feds) by an evil Hollywood actress!
