Apple vs. Apple: The good bits

ndouglas · 03/31/06 11:23AM

Apple Computer is defending its logo against Apple Corps, the recording label owned by the Beatles. The latter claims that the Apple logo in the iTunes store dilutes Apple Corps' trademark. There's law involved, and serious IP issues and blah blah blah. But here are the good parts:

Nine least likely Apple-turns-30 surprises

ndouglas · 03/30/06 01:01AM

Only three days to Apple's 30th birthday. Year 20 was celebrated with a limited-edition special edition Mac (a 250 MHz speed demon for just $7500!). But back then, Steve was on his forced hiatus, and no one believes he'd let Apple pull that shit again. So what'll it be this year?

Apple still turning 30

ndouglas · 03/29/06 02:46AM

The Valley loves a good anniversary — it's nice to see anyone last over a year out here — and of course they love a good Apple puff piece. So convergence (not the PDA-iPod-phone kind) has arrived in the form of Apple's 30th anniversary. The fruit company itself may not be partying yet, but Valley reporters couldn't wait til next Sunday to publish their Apple retrospects. Their angles:

Remainders: You know, you're allowed to make new fake photos

¬ The bubble stretches backward in time when Wil Wheaton quotes MySpace's sale value as $850 million (the real price was $580 mil). Can we keep the falsely inflated figures to future valuations? [Suicide Girls]
¬ Someone writes about a desolate post-Apocalyptic Silicon Valley — and it's not a disgruntled ex-SketchUp employee. [PR Web]
¬ Fake Steve Jobs: same as Real Steve Jobs? [SF Gate]
¬ Oh, New Media, you're so lovable. Where could the mysterious iPod phone mockup floating around the blogosphere come from? How about Business 2.0's April 2005 cover? [Mac OS Rumors]
¬ Hey wait, that stock photo on Microsoft's piracy page...isn't that an iBook? [Microsoft.com]

Apple's software boss quits

ndouglas · 03/28/06 09:52PM

He'll probably still crash the birthday party: Apple's chief software technology officer will pack his boxes one day before its 30th anniversary on April 1. Avie Tevanian was one of the NeXt Computer guys Steve brought back into Apple. And what a Valley hottie!

Remainders: A healthy career in Chinese gold farming

Now playing World of Warcraft can get you a job. Thrilling, really, to discover that a game played by destroying arbitrarily assigned enemies ad infinitum, rising up a ladder until reaching a disappointing top that isn't a top at all, commiserating with socially inept addicts with little life outside the computer, could prepare you for tech work. No, seriously, I am shocked at this news. [Wired]
It's funny 'cause it's petty: Just as Microsoft pushes Vista to 2007 and shuffles the whole Live department, MSN goes down for an hour. [Threadwatch]
AT&T doesn't really want to break your Internet. Sure, that's what it says while it's sober. [ZDNet]
Google Finance doesn't just disappoint Yahoo blogger (and "Expert Author") Jeremy Zawodny, it makes him sad. Jeremy comes this close to naming the folks who let Yahoo Finance rot, then praises the product manager in charge of Google Finance. "Not speaking for my employer" indeed. [WebProNews]
Idealab shareholders agree to pay founder Bill Gross's $50 million loan. And now he can't have that puppy he asked for, because that was the agreement about responsibility, Bill, and for now you can only keep your goldfish. [LA Times]
Songbird plays a good game of gotcha. Steve Jobs in 2002: "If you legally acquire music, you need to have the right to manage it on all other devices that you own." France fighting iTunes in 2006: "The consumer must be able to listen to the music they have bought on no matter what platform." Oh, they couldn't mean it the way he did, they're just the French. [Songbird]

Where the OS's at?

ndouglas · 03/23/06 07:12PM

So while Vista's delayed again — "Arrange the deck chairs this way, guys, we'll never sink now!" — let's see how all the OS-makers are faring with their deadlines.

Gimme that sexy Steve religion

ndouglas · 03/20/06 12:36PM

The Times UK goes out on a limb and — because no one has ever done this before, at least not today — compares a Steve Jobs keynote to a religious experience.

Acquicor: Hat seeks cattle

Empty holding companies go public all the time — the recently IPO'd company run by three Apple ex-execs is nothing special. But it just feels so bubbly to read:

Woz kills wOz

ndouglas · 03/16/06 09:26PM

Steve Wozniak shut down Wheels of Zeus, his GPS company that had shifted into the RFID field. Know those spimes, the super-searchable objects that Bruce Sterling brought up in his SXSW speech (and has been pushing for years)? Well, that's what wOz was supposed to give us.

Steve Jobs's new living room

The mysterious Flickr user "Privateye" grabbed some AP photos from us and "repurposed" them for another snappy comic.

Remainders: The Michael Arrington proximity meter

ndouglas · 03/02/06 02:53AM

In case you didn't catch it earlier (we didn't), Lot 49 built a thorough Google Evil Scale. Includes the wise corporate maxim, "Don't be an accessory to evil." [Google Corporate Information: Making Money]
A petition tells AOL to drop its new certified mail system (where users pay to get whitelisted and free e-mails end up getting spam-filtered away). Signers include the Democratic National Committee, Craig Newmark of Craigslist, the AFL-CIO, and others. Better plan: let AOL carry on, thus ensuring that the last poor fools using AOL mail will finally leave. [Dear AOL]
Blogger Michael Arrington, running from the hordes of TechCrunch party guests, may flee to London so his sixth party can actually fit inside the venue. [CrunchNotes]
A little groaning about Apple's less-than-fun Tuesday announcement. Bloggers can't decide whether to hate Apple for not changing the world again this month, or to hate each other for posting fake photos of an iPod Video. [Good Morning Silicon Valley]
Michael Arrington can't be as positive as he always sounds on TechCrunch, can he? Today's "Mike's true feelings" meter: How much distance is between him and the entrepreneurs he's always photographed with? For instance, Mike's keeping some distance from the Israeli businessmen pictured above (that's him on the far right). But that one overlapped arm is just enough to say "I won't run away. These guys have a chance." [TechCrunch]

The man, the mystery, the black turtleneck

ndouglas · 03/01/06 01:39PM

We all know Steve Jobs keeps a closet of that one outfit — like a hipster Charlie Brown — and now you can dress like the Pope of Mac, thanks to a gallery featuring the famous turtleneck, the blue jeans, and the New Balance sneakers.

Video: Steve Jobs introduces the iPod Hi-Fi

ndouglas · 03/01/06 12:48PM

Well, this (after the annoying MS ad) is simply a video of Steve Jobs introducing the iPod Hi-Fi. He's relaxed as hell and proud of the product.

OMG Steve

ndouglas · 02/28/06 04:06PM

As noted earlier, at today's on-campus Apple event, I got a bit fanboyish being in the Presence of Jobs — and Apple staff noticed.
