'Times': Intellectually Lazy or Just Not Making An Effort To Be Smart?

Emily Gould · 01/26/07 09:30AM

So remember back when the NYT misquoted John Kerry's "botched joke" back in November and had to run a correction? It's now corrected online, but the original article, by Kate Zernike, quoted Kerry as making the joke exactly as it'd appeared in his prepared remarks — "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush" — except with the omission of the word 'us.' The actual quote, as per the correction the Times originally ran on 11/3: ""You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

'Daily News' Can't Even Get Credit For Things It Does Right

An article on Sunday about some of the more captivating events in the New York region in 2006 referred incorrectly to a federal investigation of Jared Paul Stern, a former contributor to the Page Six section of The New York Post whom Ronald W. Burkle, the supermarket magnate, has accused of an extortion attempt. The investigation came to light when it was reported by The Post; it was not announced by federal authorities. In addition, allegations that Mr. Stern had been caught on video demanding a $100,000 payment, as well as monthly stipends, for keeping negative accounts of Mr. Burkle from the press were made by Mr. Burkle, not by federal authorities.

  • Dean Baquet wins the coveted Observer Media Mensch of the Year award. This follows hot on the heels of a bunch of other bullshit made-up media awards by organizations you've barely heard of, and comes a day in advance of our naming Chris Mohney's right testicle Gawker's Blog Ball of the Year. • Jeff Zucker may take over for Bob Wright as head of NBC by the end of the year. Honestly, you get the feeling that Zucker could rip the head off a transgendered prostitute and skullfuck it in the middle of a board meeting and he'd still get promoted. [NYP]

Mrs. Ponch Sets The Record Straight On Erik Estrada's Alleged Tire Frugality

seth · 09/21/06 07:46PM

A recent PrivacyWatch sighting of Erik Estrada, whom we recall fondly from our youths as the shirtless hunk pointing at us seductively every time we opened our locker door, placed the former CHiPs star at a Firestone dealership in the Valley, where he bargained over the price of a set of tires for his son. A lively comments exchange followed, which included some highly contestable ratings data relating to Estrada's early, Spanish-challenged work on the Telenovela circuit. Setting the record straight on all counts today is none other than Nanette Estrada—"aka Ponch's wife," as she helpfully appends her signature line—who responds to each and every claim with, quite frankly, a far greater good-natured spirit than befits a hearsay blog item about how her husband's pinchpenny tendencies could potentially result in a teenager-stranding blowout on the 405:

Jon Friedman Finally Tells You Something You Won't Hear Anywhere Else

abalk2 · 09/19/06 09:10AM

Yesterday Jon Friedman wrote a column about Katie Couric that began, "Katie Couric, at first, lived up to all the hype surrounding her move from NBC's "Today" show to "The CBS Evening News." Couric's show finished first in the much-followed television ratings on her first few nights after her ballyhooed debut on Sept. 5. In a remarkably short time, even by American television standards, Couric has slipped and her program fell back to a position that CBS unhappily knows all too well — third place, trailing NBC and ABC."

It Just Seems Like That Many

Because of an editing error, an article on Saturday about Shawn Green, a right fielder for the Mets who is a source of pride to his fellow Jews, misstated the population of Jews in New York City. It is about one million, not two million.

Marisha Pessl: An Apology

abalk2 · 08/21/06 02:30PM

A post earlier today about author Marisha Pessl suggested that she might only be "book hot." Having seen another photo and verified that it was not taken by Marion Ettinger, we have upgraded Ms. Pessl's condition to "TV hot." Clearly today's Times photo was unrepresentative; maybe everything looks better in black and white.

The Personal Health column in Science Times on Tuesday, about treatments and prevention of migraines, misidentified a drug sometimes used for headache relief with medications like a triptan or an opiate. It is acetaminophen, not amphetamine.

Thus Setting Up The Ultimate "He Touched You Where?" Joke

An article on Saturday about Eric N. Olsen, a substitute teacher accused of molesting in Southern California, referred incorrectly to the jurisdiction of a police spokeswoman, Diane Galindo, who said Mr. Olsen admitted molesting girls over the past three years. The jurisdiction, Ontario, is a city, not a county.
