'Times' Shocked By Fratty I-Banker's Take On Skirts!

Maggie · 10/08/07 03:40PM

Despite having written about it a couple of weeks ago, we continue to receive emails about that self-described "articulate and classy" young woman who put her neck out there on Craigslist, flung caution and etiquette to the wind and flat-out asked if anyone could help her nab a guy with a salary of at least a half-million a year. Okay, so Jane Austen might have been just slightly more subtle, but this (alleged!) lady's tactics have captured the interest of many, including the New York Times, which today ran a piece about the idiot i-banker whose pissy response to our little gold digger included his JPMorgan Chase signature.

By now you've probably seen that "I will blow you for Genesis tickets" Craigslist post that's burning up the internets. You've probably thought, "This cannot be real." Well, of course it isn't . But the writer is someone close to home. [CBITC]

How To Marry A Rich Man

abalk · 09/28/07 10:40AM

Let's face it: You're not getting any younger, and if you're going to nab a husband who pulls down enough dough to get you a place on the park, you'd better get cracking. You need to show the initiative of this young go-getter, who placed a since-deleted ad on Craigslist soliciting advice. She comes right to the point: "Are there any guys who make 500K or more on this board? Any wives? Could you send me some tips? I dated a business man who makes average around 200 - 250. But that's where I seem to hit a roadblock. 250,000 won't get me to central park west. I know a woman in my yoga class who was married to an investment banker and lives in Tribeca, and she's not as pretty as I am, nor is she a great genius. So what is she doing right? How do I get to her level?"

Great Job For A Slutty Ambulance-Driving Journalist!

Maggie · 09/27/07 12:20PM

At a loss for what to do with that EMS training you did in college over summer break? If you're also single, unemployed and well-versed in STDs (such rare traits in this town!), then you may be perfect for this hot little number, who's in the market for a "lasting relationship centered around sex." NSA, natch. A "major new Manhattan magazine" (we can't imagine who fits such a description) is currently trolling for sex columnists. "Medical certification a plus," according to their Craigslist ad. Oh gross.

Harvard Reuniongoer Seeks Ho Who Suits A "Classy Setting"

Emily Gould · 09/18/07 04:20PM

This ad has already been deemed too douchey for Craigslist, but it is still apparently making the rounds at Harvard, from whence it (supposedly) emanated. "My final club has a reunion this fall, and my relationship of two years ended disastrously earlier this summer. I have an invitation for myself plus one, and am willing to show you a great time. It is a private party, in an extremely classy setting. There is no real way to describe how ornate the club is, but I guarantee that it will be the most upscale experience of your life." Oh, sign us up! But not so fast. This gentleman has some pretty stringent requirements.

An Anonymous Angel Reaches Out To Britney Spears

mark · 09/12/07 06:49PM

As we all learned yesterday through two minutes and eleven seconds of the most affecting moving images ever transmitted over the YouTubes, even though it sometimes seems as if the entire world has turned on turned on VMA exploitation victim Britney Spears, there are still those willing to reach out to her as she tries to navigate this seemingly endless dark night of the erstwhile-pop-star soul. In the interest of connecting Spears with the generous, but anonymity-valuing, individuals offering to help her through these difficult times, we pass along this note from a Craiglister:

Birthplaces of the rich and Webby

Mary Jane Irwin · 09/12/07 11:43AM

Before the Googleplex there was a garage. Prior to Marck Zuckerberg's hip Facebook HQ, he had a dorm room. Second Life got its start in a small warehouse - now turned Moroccan furniture store — found in Linden Alley. And Craigslist? That's still basically run out of a house. Business 2.0 chief of reporters Yi-Wyn Yen goes on a photographic tour of Web startup birthplaces. If you need motivation to jump on the giant Web 2.0 bubble, check it out. And work on your coding.

There Are Hookers On The Internet!

abalk · 09/05/07 02:00PM

How great is the Internet? The ease of communication that technology provides has allowed a once highly-localized industry to become incredibly mobile, enabling its itinerant practitioners to travel from one city to another, where they briefly set up shop to hawk their wares and then move on to the next welcoming town. The industry, of course, is prostitution, and, as is his wont, The Man is cracking down. Take eight jetsetters who simply wanted to summer (and whore) on Long Island:

It's settled, money can't buy Yahoo love

Tim Faulkner · 08/31/07 01:31PM

Yahoo has agreed to pay $4 million to settle the almost two-year-old class action lawsuit, Anthony v. Yahoo, in which Robert Anthony alleged Yahoo did not fulfill his needs — or rather, its obligations to paid subscribers. He claimed that the Web giant's personal-ad listings were polluted with non-personal listings and defunct profiles. Yahoo, while continues to contest the charges, is accepting the settlement so that it, and Mr. Anthony, can get on with their lives, such as they are.

CNET's missed connections

Megan McCarthy · 08/30/07 05:40PM

Hey New York CNET employees, have a good time last night? Some of you did, from what we hear. Whomever you were, um, "entertaining" posted a missed connections ad on Craigslist. Behind the scenes research (er, IM chats with employees and former employees) has revealed that the "CNET girls" in question are not on the editorial side of things, which rules out our best guess, New York-based reporter and sometime CNBC pundit Caroline McCarthy. So far, speculation centers on the ad-sales department, known to insiders to include at least one "perverted, young girl-chasing alcoholic" figure who reportedly inspires most of the wild nights out. We're dying to know if the missed connection was made, and if the alleged girl-chaser was a factor. Fill us in.

Are you hot enough for TechCrunch20?

Megan McCarthy · 08/30/07 03:35PM

Want to get into TechCrunch20, the upcoming startup conference held by Mahalo CEO Jason Calacanis and TechCrunch editor Michael Arrington? Are you "RELIABLE," between 5'7" and 5'9" and have "long hair and a petite frame?" This is could be your chance. According to an ad on Craigslist, two models are needed to work all day on September 18, the second day of TechCrunch20, doing promotions for a "media company" in San Francisco's "Financial District." Interested? Just send in your resume, headshot, and full body shot to techcrunchmodel@gmail.com. But which "media company" is it?

We asked if you would pay extra to buy a Googler's bookshelf — listed, for a premium price, on Craigslist. If you work at Cisco, apparently the answer's yes. [Valleywag]

Would you pay extra to buy a Googler's bookshelf?

Owen Thomas · 08/28/07 10:14AM

How much is having Google on your resumé worth? Apparently 20 percent more — on your used bookshelf. On Craigslist, a white Ikea Expedit bookshelf, previously owned by a Google employee, is selling for $120. The ad even touts its "true Silicon Valley heritage." Meanwhile, at the far southern edge of the Silicon Valley metro area in Gilroy, Calif., a similar bookshelf is selling for a mere $100. Call it the Google premium.

Has Craig Newmark quit Craigslist?

Owen Thomas · 08/23/07 03:29PM

A fascinating tidbit buried in a story about Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin's allegations of child prostitution on Craigslist: Susan MacTavish Best, Craigslist spokeswoman and girlfriend of CEO Jim Buckmaster, claims that Craig Newmark "is no longer involved in the company's daily affairs," according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. And indeed, Newmark, the company's founder, though he was listed on the Craigslist management page a week ago, no longer appears there. Newmark has certainly made enough money, thanks to a 2004 stock purchase by eBay, to retire on. And his "team bio," still online, notes that he's "embarrassed" that the site is named after him. But for the geeks who still idolize him, the idea of a Craigslist without Craig would be hard to bear. Update: We heard from Newmark. His comments, after the jump.

Megan McCarthy · 08/22/07 12:00PM

Valley-hot business-networking site LinkedIn uses rival Craigslist to lure applicants, describes itself in the ad as "pre-IPO." Speaking of which, has everyone seen the SEC's warning about "Pre-IPO Investing"? [Craigslist]

Craig Newmark, newspaper mogul meet peaceably

Megan McCarthy · 08/13/07 03:06PM

On the left, Craig Newmark, the filthy-rich founder of Craigslist, the site that has, some say, decimated the newspaper business by making classifieds ads irrelevant. On the right, Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher of the New York Times, who, rumor has it, has decided to drop its subscription-only TimesSelect service. No word on if this was taken mere moments before Sulzberger decided to throttle Newmark, on behalf of wealthy newspaper families everywhere. Given Newmark's tendency to bloviate endlessly, baselessly, and tediously, in a monotone drone, on what he sees as biased reporting, we'd hardly blame Sulzberger for anything he did. Will You Be The Next Deelishis? Will We?

Emily Gould · 08/09/07 04:00PM

Oh, but wait... does this casting notice for the next season of Flavor of Love mean things somehow didn't work out between Flav and Deelishis?
