Jessica · 11/02/05 02:15PM

• Can you believe that Gothamist s Moveable Hype concert series is already on its fifth installment? Yes? Oh. In any case, Bravo Silva, The Cloud Room, The Capitol Years, and Snowden perform, funnyman Aziz Ansari hosts, and the entire thing will end up on Flickr. [Paper]

'Post' Secures Award for Crackiest Page Layout Ever

Jessica · 11/02/05 01:00PM

There's a terrifying story today about a man who dressed as a fireman for Halloween, lit a fire outside a woman's Chelsea apartment, and then sexually assaulted her for 12 hours. Thankfully, the Post lightens the mood a little bit by pairing the piece with a photograph of Lindsay Lohan in her firefighter Halloween costume. The laughter eases the horror, no?

Society Burns

Jesse · 11/02/05 11:52AM

Our metro-minded friends at Gothamist were kind enough to let us know about a fire in Chelsea parking garage this morning. As always, the 'Ists provided some useful service journalism, pointing out related disruptions on the Eighth Avenue IND lines. Unfortunately, they neglected to mention the news that folks like us would find most exciting: A bevy of socialites were attending the conflagration.

The Smell Lingers

Jesse · 11/02/05 10:18AM

The sweet smell of syrup blanketed the city last Thursday night — not that we smelled it ourselves, but, then, our nostrils were otherwise occupied that evening — and no one had any idea why. In this week's Talk of the Town, which we just got to last night, The New Yorker looses its inner Sy Hersh (if not, alas, its actual Sy Hersh) on the question of the aroma. The real Sy would have done better. Some Remnickian hypotheses:

Prince Charles and Camilla Get All Up in Our Business

Jessica · 11/02/05 08:45AM

England's Prince Charles and his newish bride, Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall, have come to America to schmooze and, according to Chaz, "celebrate these longstanding and very special links between our two countries." Thus far, this has involved a visit to Ground Zero, meeting with relatives of the 67 Britons killed on 9/11, dedicating a stone, partying at the MoMA, and, according to Google News, 1,111 articles related to these fascinating events. Add to that the obligatory appearance of Page Six editor and royal commentator Richard Johnson on the Today show and Drudge's close attention to Camilla's dress count, and we have media delirium.

To Do: Absinthe, Taxis, or Invisible Gwen

Jessica · 11/01/05 02:15PM

• Artists, designers, public officials, transportation experts, and tax-industry reps present concepts for improving the New York City cab at Parsons' "Designing the Taxi" showcase at Tishman Auditorium. Here's our concept, free of charge: lower the fucking fare. [TONY]
• Over at the Baruch Performing Arts Center, the Aquila Theatre Company present their reworking of H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man as a paranoia-filled metaphor for our nation's futile war on "invisible" enemies. If that sounds a bit high-minded, Gwen Stefani plays Madison Square Garden. Holla back! [flavorpill and Upcoming]

To Do: Hallow Weenies

Jessica · 10/31/05 03:40PM

• At Scenic s "I Am an Evil Halloween Party" bash: a live freak show, human flesh-hook tug-o-war, go-go girls, and the opportunity to inflict bodily harm on yourself for a nominal prize. No time like Halloween to admit you re into weird, freaky shit. [Paper]
• It's officially Gay Christmas when the village's annual Halloween parade gets rolling. If you want to participate, get wasted and be on 6th Avenue between Spring and Broome by 6pm. [About.com]

We didn t read it in college, and we re not reading it now. [TONY]

Jessica · 10/28/05 03:05PM

Friday:

• If it's a bit too early for you to be getting your Halloween drink on (pussy), head to Pioneer Theater's All Night Vampire Movie Marathon. Six films screen tonight — some conventional (Bram Stoker's Dracula), some not (Nicholas Cage's turn as a NYC literary agent-turned-blood-sucking-vampire in 1989's Vampire's Kiss. Sometimes, the jokes write themselves). [flavorpill]

Sunday:
• A bit of culture mixed in to your weekend revelry: Flavorpill notes that Jon Kessler's multimedia exhibition The Palace at 4am at P.S. 1 is a "skeptic's take on EPCOT," where "whirling kinetic sculptures of surveillance cameras and video monitors pull viewers down the rabbit hole of representation, leaving us to find our way out again." We sort of like our blackout holes drunk, thank you. [flavorpill]

As If Mary-Kate Would Even Eat a Tootsie Roll

Jessica · 10/28/05 01:45PM

We're not sure when the following incident occurred, but we suppose it was before miniature tycoon Mary-Kate Olsen fled higher education for the mindless safety for the West Coast:
