Mayor Bloomberg to Gay-Marry His Longtime Adviser Companions

Seth Abramovitch · 07/07/11 09:10PM

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is totally down with the gays. (The "R" is for "RAWR!") And what better way to put his money where his mouth is than to dance shirtless on a speaker at the Once Upon a Pines Party? But he isn't doing that. But he is marrying two of his top gay advisers on July 24. It's the same-sex marriage equivalent of throwing the ceremonial first pitch on opening day!

NYC Extends Hours to Satisfy Your Same-Sex Marriage Needs

Seth Abramovitch · 07/07/11 12:45AM

Is the date July 24th on your wall calendar covered in little pink bells and caterers' emergency cell numbers? Then you might be one of the thousands of New Yorkers expected to flood city offices that Sunday, looking to get hitched the second the state's gay marriage bill goes into effect. You've waited long enough — open them courthouse doors!

Dominique Strauss-Kahn Needs Help With the Door

Max Read · 07/06/11 07:58PM

Rich and poor, French and American, innocent and guilty, we all sometimes have a little bit of trouble with our keys sometimes. Most of us don't, however, have a troop of photographers willing to help you jiggle the lock a little bit—as former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn did in Tribeca.

How to Be a Young Lady in 1939 Manhattan

Max Read · 07/03/11 01:03PM

While sorting books, Reddit user unmoderated found a copy of New York: Behind the Scenes, a 1939 guide by Lee Mortimer, and scanned the very valuable "Young Lady in Manhattan..." section (apparently part of a larger "Family in Manhattan" chapter). It's fascinating. And, admittedly, a little out of date ("unescorted ladies might as well hang themselves after ten p.m."), though the job market for young New Yorkers doesn't sound all that different from now:

This Woman Feels Very Strongly About Her Right to Play Music on the Bus

Seth Abramovitch · 06/26/11 10:26PM

This might provide some clues as to why no one in New York is riding the bus anymore. Asked by a driver to not use her iPhone's speakers to play her music, the woman unleashed an extremely loud, hateful, and profanity-filled tirade ("You need to shut the f*ck up and drive your bus, you miserable old f*cking man!...You f*cking honky!"), which was captured on video by another, pissed-off rider. iPhones fighting iPhones!

Even Gay Marriage Requires Super-Rich Libertarians

Max Read · 06/25/11 11:25AM

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal both have behind-the-scenes accounts of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's successful push for gay marriage in New York. And (surprise!) the key was a bunch of rich Republicans.

Seth Abramovitch · 06/23/11 08:11PM

Firefighters rushed to Courtney Love's $27,000-a-month West Village town house early Thursday morning, after an emergency call was placed to 911 saying a fire had broken out, the Times reports.

Obama, Bieber Visits to Turn NYC Into Gridlocked Hellhole

Seth Abramovitch · 06/23/11 03:06AM

In a rare astronomical convergence, two massive celestial bodies will pass through Manhattan on Thursday. One has the moves of Michael Jackson, a megawatt smile, and has to duck teenage girls' panties wherever he goes. The other is Justin Bieber. But don't plan on getting into, out of, or anywhere around the city in anything besides a subway car: traffic will be a bitch.

Palin, Trump Meet for Cruddy Pizza

If New York City seemed especially smart last night, it's because Sarah Palin and Donald Trump dined together over a slice of Famiglia pizza in Times Square.

'Rape Cop' Accuser, 'Devastated and Disappointed,' Issues Statement

Max Read · 05/31/11 07:11PM

A week after a jury acquitted New York City police officers Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata over charges that Moreno had raped a drunk woman while Mata stood guard, their accuser released a statement describing herself as "devastated and disappointed by the jury's decision." The fashion executive, who lived in the East Village but has since moved to San Francisco, thanks the District Attorney's office and Mayor Bloomberg, saying she's "overwhelmed" by the support she's been shown since the verdict, and that "public opinion will be the ultimate verdict." Here's the full statement:

Elderly Woman Sexually Assaulted on Upper East Side

Max Read · 05/30/11 08:13PM

An 85-year-old woman walking near her home on the Upper East Side of Manhattan was dragged by her neck and forced to perform oral sex on her attacker in a stairwell on 83rd St. She's in stable condition at a nearby hospital, but her attacker is still at large; police spent Monday driving vans "equipped with loudspeakers blaring the suspect's description" around the neighborhood. He's said to be "a light-skinned Hispanic man, 25-30 years old." [WPIX]

Did Anthony Weiner Tweet a Picture of His Weiner?

Max Read · 05/28/11 04:55PM

Did liberal hero and would-be Mayor of New York Rep. Anthony Weiner (D - N.Y.) Tweet a picture of his own, underwear-clad erection last night? Conservative bloggers sure seem to hope so!
