NYPD Officers Catherine Guzman and Mariana Diaz and two of their colleagues were disciplined for tossing a football to a little boy they encountered in a Bronx housing project, and now Guzman and Diaz are complaining that their punishment was unfair. It sure was—they should have all been fired.

Max Read · 09/12/11 06:13PM

Consternation!! Alarm!! Here is a shocking video of NYPD officers at the West Indian Day Parade, in which the cops appear to be enjoying themselves and interacting positively with the community, instead of preventing shootings that were happening blocks away, possibly at a different time altogether!

Puerto Rico Cops Just as Bad as Mainland American Cops

Hamilton Nolan · 09/08/11 08:34AM

Puerto Rico! The island that just won't become our 51st state, no matter how much we bat our eyelashes. Still, as a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico has the right to have a police force just as brutal and corrupt as any in the USA.

How the NYPD Turned Itself Into a Little CIA

John Cook · 08/24/11 01:46PM

The AP's Matt Apuzzo and Adam Goldman broke an extraordinary story today about the NYPD's unfettered and probably illegal intelligence operation—which employs "rakers" and "mosque crawlers" to troll Arab neighborhoods for information even when no crime is suspected—and its tight integration with the CIA, which has covert operatives deployed within the department. Basically, if you're a Muslim in New York, you either work for the NYPD or are being watched by them.

Jumper Rescued From 70th Floor of 30 Rock

Seth Abramovitch · 08/11/11 01:43AM

Thousands of New York tourists and office workers watched in horror on Wednesday afternoon as a distraught 23-year-old man dangled 70 stories above Rockefeller Plaza, threatening to jump onto the site of the famed skating rink below. The man wore "an American flag bandana on his face and...a tie," and had "several bags, one of which has a jug of water, and was handing policemen letters with...messages on them," Gothamist reports. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon bandleader Questlove also noted via Twitter, "holy lord—-why is this on the camera feed like in HD?!!?!?!?? like i can see his nose hair! wtf!," later adding, "Whew!!!!! They got him!!!!!!!!! Now beat his ass for ruining my lunch."

Steel yourself for what will surely become the most sedentary spin-off Law & Order yet: The NYPD has announced the formation of a new division, the Social Media Unit, which will solve crimes by Facebook stalking people. Assistant Commissioner Kevin O'Connor (no relation) will head up the unit.

Fugitive Taunts Cops on Facebook, Gets Caught

Max Read · 07/28/11 10:51AM

Taunting police on Facebook when they're out searching for you is, admittedly, pretty funny. But if you're going to do it, it's important that you not get caught. Otherwise you end up like recently-apprehended fugitive Victor Burgos: In jail, and looking really dumb.

Don't Say 'Doo Doo' Near NYPD Cops

Jeff Neumann · 07/13/11 05:21AM

A 17-year-old kid says he was beaten by cops in the Bronx after he walked past an officer who was scraping dog shit off his shoe and said, "It smells like doo-doo." Tyre Davis told the Daily News that he was then berated by the cops, handcuffed and later punched several times in the head. Who wouldn't laugh if they saw a cop step in dog shit?

'Rape Cops' Had Previous Incident with Drunk Woman

Max Read · 07/05/11 06:27PM

While we all wait for Nancy Grace to personally hunt down and murder Casey Anthony, let's not forget the last time we felt outraged about a "not guilty" verdict: When NYPD officers Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata were acquitted of charges that Moreno had raped a drunk woman while Mata stood guard. And, in particular let's not miss out on the recently-revealed news that the "rape cops" had "another documented and troubling encounter with an intoxicated young woman."

NYPD Sets Off 5,000 Pounds of Confiscated Fireworks

Max Read · 07/02/11 03:59PM

The America-hating buzzkills at the NYPD confiscated some 5,000 pounds of fireworks this year (everything "from sparklers to professional pyrotechnics"), leaving many New Yorkers without even the chance to injure themselves or set their apartments on fire. But at least the department had the decency to film the destruction, which took place yesterday in the Bronx. Next year, guys, maybe you can spring for HD? [NYT]

'Rape Cop' Accuser, 'Devastated and Disappointed,' Issues Statement

Max Read · 05/31/11 07:11PM

A week after a jury acquitted New York City police officers Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata over charges that Moreno had raped a drunk woman while Mata stood guard, their accuser released a statement describing herself as "devastated and disappointed by the jury's decision." The fashion executive, who lived in the East Village but has since moved to San Francisco, thanks the District Attorney's office and Mayor Bloomberg, saying she's "overwhelmed" by the support she's been shown since the verdict, and that "public opinion will be the ultimate verdict." Here's the full statement:
