It's time once again for our strange dance with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group of ninety people who manage to throw the second-biggest awards orgy of the season. Their nominations came out today, so let's take a look!

We'll start with movies because they're a more a pressing matter than the TV shows. Don't be alarmed by nods like Halle Berry for Frankie and Alice or Angelina Jolie for The Tourist. This is just what happens when you split up the Drama and Musical/Comedy categories. More spaces to fill! Plus, the HFPA really likes both Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie, so they were basically just saying "Hiiiii guyyys!!!" with those nominations. Everything else is pretty unsurprising.

The Best Actor — Musical/Comedy category is noticeable for containing basically no one who will actually go on to get an Oscar nomination, so look for them to be some of the drunker ones at the notoriously booze-soaked gala. Really there aren't many surprises here where it counts, except True Grit's total lock-out and that Mila Kunis took the Supporting nod for Black Swan instead of Barbara Hershey. Maybe they'll get into a dressing room fight and smash each other into mirrors! Or maybe everyone's just too concerned about poor Winona Ryder to bother with petty things like Golden Globe Awards. My fearless forecast is that Hershey and Kunis will switch places come next month's Oscar announcements, but I've been wrong (many, many times) before.

That's a great vote of confidence for Walking Dead in the Drama category, and a bad one for poor still-ignored Breaking Bad, which had maybe its best season yet this year. It's nice to see Idris Elba up there for, well, anything, because he's such a likable and prolific actor these days. The biggest surprise on this list is, for me, Jennifer Love Hewitt, because I thought I'd heard she was just off somewhere in Minnesota teaching third grade or something. I mean, isn't that what she should be doing at this point?

So there you have 'em! The awards show is on Sunday, 1/16 and they are always fun to watch for all the aforementioned drunkenness and lack of boring technical categories (who cares about who actually makes the movies, right???), so I suggest you make a plan to sit down and watch millionaires congratulate each other for hours.
