In 1776, the Phi Beta Kappa society was founded at the College of William and Mary for men in the "pursuit of liberal education and intellectual fellowship." Over the course of the next two centuries, Greek letter societies proliferated across the U.S. and morphed into the all-male butt-chugging clubs we know as fraternities today. This year in particular was big for frats, in that they were clearly identified as the primary arena for rape to take place on campus.

Texas Student Says Frat Didn't Give Him a Bid Because He's Gay

University of Texas student Diwu Zhou says the Asian interest fraternity Lambda Phi Epsilon didn't give him a bid this fall because he's openly gay. In the wake of this allegation, LPhiE headquarters has suspended the chapter. Zhou says brothers asked him a "derogatory" question during the interview process.

On Monday afternoon, Clemson University sophomore Tucker Hipps was reported missing by the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon. A few hours later police spotted him floating in a lake under a bridge and retrieved his body. He was pronounced dead just after 5 p.m. The question that members of the Clemson community now want answered is whether fraternity brothers were responsible for his death.

Freshman Girl Impaled By Golf Club at ASU Fraternity Party

Natalie Eaton, 18, was impaled by a golf club in a freak accident at one of Arkansas State University's first parties of this year. According to police, two guys were tossing a football back and forth at a Kappa Alpha rush cookout when one decided to "bat" the football with the club. The club broke and "impaled Eaton in the left side of her neck."
